Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Announces 2010 Awa

I understand, but it would be hard for a Dr to keep track of every CI surgery worldwide. I am saying no responsible Dr would make a statement like this on the remote possibility they might have missed a case in a journal somewhere.

Also "4 Dr's told me so" was a response to a request for supporting documents for FJ's declaration. It molds well with the "I was on the phone defense"

Gotcha what you mean..ok thanks for clarifying. :)

I said that MY daughter has a better relationship with her family, because she does. That is not insensitive, or uninformed. It is a fact.

you know what, if I was hearing and my cousin was deaf, I would have taken the steps to communicate with her rather she have CI or not. Your daughter is very lucky to have a CI because if she was a child of the 70's and 80's, like my cousins, they would not give a crap about her unless she is hearing. I'm sorry, but my hearing cousins from both my mother and father side treated me the worst than any kids in my school. You have to understand it is about audist attitude that counts.

Your daughter's true friend in the family are the ones who are willing to learn ASL, will not laugh at her, nor tell her to sleep on the floor while her sister get to sleep next to her cousin, nor lock the door to keep her out while her hearing siblings are in there having fun. they would not just treat her like a second class or something. Basically, I think you are caving into that type of attitude by making sure she speak and communicate around her family because they won't take the time to learn ASL for her.

That is kinda sad..it seems like for a child to have good relationships with family members, he or she must get a CI.

It seems like the AGBell organization wont own up to the damage it has done to many generations of deaf people. It seems like the attitude is that if deaf children today have CIs and grow up happy and thriving, then all is good. That's why many of us have a bitter taste in our tongues with that organization.

To me, AG Bell is more about dollars than oralism and resistance towards ASL. This chase for for the mighty dollar, profiting on fear of deafness, is only easy to detect for the deaf population,
good point flip!!!!
If the healthcare profit factor wasn't there, I really do think that the use of oral only would be very small.
And yes, faire jour AGBAD isn't as extreme as they used to be. But they STILL have the attitude that oral only is sufficent. They don't view ASL as a useful tool or chance to be bilingal. Rather they view it as a "last resort" thing, or for kids who can pick up some speech, but can't function well enough to be fluent in spoken English.

and I see the money pouring in from the ads advocating for oralism only.

I see this all the times in Omaha, Nebraska. I lived next to Boys Town.

Shel, do you mean that if deaf children have CIs and grow up SUPERFICALLY happy and thriving? Yes. AG Bad seems to think " Oh a kid who can speak will do better then a signer"
I've got to say that I think a lot of their research is biased since they seem to have a significent percentage of really high achiever families.
They also don't understand that just b/c a kid goes off to college or has oral abilty it doesn't mean that they are a sucess. Heck, it seems like almost every oral kid (including the high achievers) have significent social emotional issues.

Well that is true from my experience. But I am from an older generation.

I think so too. If anyone who have been going to take speech theraphy a lot for years that would makes them feel pressures more forget their own self esteems. That's normal some of them turns out OK and some of them turns out a little and will get over with it but social emotional issues shows.

I got a glimpse of that from an old deaf friend that was mainstreamed for a short time in my high school on FB. He had just found me a month and and we did correspond for a while. He was shocked that I learned ASL and very involved with the Deaf community. He said that he never saw himself as being "one of them" so my take was that he never learned ASL or got involved in the Deaf community since high school. Well, lately he has been putting himself down on his FB status...the lastest one was "(his own name) is a stupid fat loser." That was like the 4th one so I finally asked him if everything was ok through PM and he said that nobody ever takes him seriously because they think he cant do anything due to his deafness and that they are all right becuase he is a loser and cant do anything right. Wow! Talk about serious self-esteem issues. I remember I used to have the same mentality about myself and that just reminded me how lucky I was to escape it for good. I tried telling him about taking ASL classes and he snapped at me saying that he doesnt need it.

I feel bad for him.
