Does anyone ever make their own acroynms to remember things?

When I got my real estate license, I had to remember the primary responsibilities of a real estate agent which included a number of things, and I made an acroynm out of it "COLD AC" (which reminded me of a cold air conditioner which was something I could look out for when looking at houses with clients.)

Now, with my networking class, I had to learn the 7 layers of an OSI model, and they are Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data Link and Physical layers.

So, for me to remember that, I came up with "A, P, S, T, N, D, P – "Andrea Prefers Silly Things, Not Dumb Physics"

It helps me to remember! What about you?

i make acrobymns all the time whene er i'm styiding for my social work courses or need to remember smeothing impirant.

AC,

I had my real estate license a couple years ago here in Minnesota and I never used one of those. I have to say, though, that it was one of the easiest exams I've ever taken.

Same here. I know of some who failed it the first time around, though!

That's great! I never thought of that. Makes perfect sense (without the Pizzas now LOL)

These techniques are known as "mnenomics" and are often taught to people who are having memory problems, or taking a seminar to increase memory. It has been shown that they are very effective in increasing the ability to remember critical information.

BTW, I use them all the time.

HOMES-Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.

Names of all the Great Lakes.

The only one I remember from my previous education was in math, either trig or geometry, I forget, but:
SOHCAHTOA - Sin=(Opposite/Hypotenuse) Cosine=(Adjacent/Hypotenuse) Tangent=(Opposite/Adjacent)

Now I'm restarting Chem and I use this for I,II,VII,VIII in the periodic table.. I made this up myself

I had forgotten that was called mnenomics. And the two examples I gave - the real estate and the IT stuff - are only two examples I have used this technique. It's quite effective when used properly. I recommend it for anyone!

akrameems?!?!?! huuked un phuniks wurked fer me!!!!

IN college, I used Acronyms and Mneumonics to help memorize almost everything. In study groups we would ratify those where 5-6 of us could use these.

when i took medial transrription, i frueqnetly used acronyms to study my vocab of 75 words/week.

I have used Acronyms to remember things. But, I forgot what I once remembered now..:)

Acronyms are used all the time. Especially in the world of Texting.

I have seen many people use them here as well.

When I was in school. I had several of them to help me remember answers for test. I also used the one to remember the order of the planets.

What in the world is a cold air conditioner? :P

LOL you just wanted to revive this thread, didn't ya? ;)

No, the cold air makes me think of an air conditioner which is something you'd find in many houses, so it was something real-estate related, otherwise I would never have remembered to use "COLD AC" ya know? Doesn't make complete sense but enough sense for me to remember it. :)
