GARY, Ind. -- Church leaders who bought a defunct Indiana funeral home in a tax sale have stumbled upon four bodies that had been left behind in the vacant building.

Lake County Coroner David J. Pastrick called the situation in the former Serenity Gardens Funeral Home in Gary "unbelievable."

Leaders of the Northlake Church of Christ called authorities after finding a body bag on a table Sunday.

Pastrick and his staff found one body in the bag, then another in a burial box and finally two more in caskets.

None has been identified.

Pastrick said the bodies may have been there since 2006, when the funeral home's business license was revoked after several people filed complaints.

Gary police and state agencies are investigating.

That's really irresponsible of them. Dont they ever have any respect for the dead?

That's really messed up, I hope they get this straightened out. :(

Didn't anyone miss these folks???

The families probably thought their loved ones were buried. There was a funeral home (Florida, I think) that was disposing of bodies instead of burying them properly. I remember watching the footage of them recovering numerous remains off of the property. It was a huge scam and I would have to believe that the bodies left behind in the funeral home for that long weren't forgotten by the families...just believed they were buried.

An abandoned funeral home with bodies being left behind is sure creepy!

Hope this problem will be solved and bodies being properly buried.

Did the place have electric for 3 years? what about the smell?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.

How could no one have noticed the smell... especially after 3 years?

Yes, ur right...and I believe it happened right here in Jacksonville, Florida. Bodies upon bodies were found, several into one casket. Others were found in rooms, even one still in a hearse! The owner of the funeral home was elderly and did not keep records.

People were very upset, even having their deceased dug up and having their dental/DNA to prove it was their loved one buried.

Was a horrific case!....It went to court, and I'm not sure what happened. It's still a mystery to some people, not knowing if their deceased love one is really buried and where?

No wonder their license was revoked - they managed to leave 4 bodies behind!
