2-Year-Old Gets Drunk; Baby-Sitter Charged

A bit off topic here, but: When my younger brother was born in Canada, the doctor gave him peach brandy to settle him down before his circumcision.
Also, my mother used to rub a drop of whiskey on our gums as babies when we were teething.

True, your post remind me of my mom. My mom rub my 10 years younger sister with vodka or gin when she was teething. I asked my mom why she do that? She explained that it calm pain down...

Oh yeah my ex mother in law did the same thing to my first son, boy I almost lost it, then my ex husband wouldn't even listen to me, so I called the dr office and told him about what my ex mother in law did by rubbing whiskey on my son's gum cause she said it helps the teething pains, but the doctor told me that they don't do that anymore, so I made sure she wouldn't dare do it again on any of my children... grrrrr...I'm just glad she isn't in my life anymore, I can't stand that woman..... :pissed:

Oh god at your ex mil! I won't do that either! My son never complained about teething...so I am grateful for that! But still..she was wrong for giving your son whiskey for sooth the pain. UGH!

Whiskey does have good medicine value and people in the Deep South still do use grain alochol, whiskey, bourbourn and even homemade moonshine for medical uses. There is no reason to be yelling at your family when they are soothing your child's pain. That is a very time honored method and it does work !!!!

Also the another thing is today's doctors are very rooted in liberalism and greedy about money. There is a saying that goes like this

" Nurses put people first and the doctors put money first"

so it would not surprise me that the doctor wants you to buy something that does not work half as well as whiskey does when soothing the teething pain of a kid. I can tell you it does work !!!

The medicine, Orajel is full of b.s.

That is interesting. I think that makes a sense for the old remedy. It's too bad others who said that it is bad idea because they don't get the point. I could imagine that taking their kids to a doctor so that he give them a shot or medicine for the painless which cost so expensive. It makes a big difference.

Yes, I´m agree that it´s wrong to give babies whiskey or any spirits to calm the pain down...

Yes, my both sons never complained about teething either. I would NEVER give them any cognacs/spirits to calm pains down since I know that the alocholic are bad for babies to children.

Yes, Angel, I´m not surprised what your ex MIL do that to your son because a lot of mothers do like this to their babies in old fashioned way... Every Grannies including my do their children then their children do their children.......... I would say it´s old fashion tradition which they thought it´s best medicine for babies... :dunno: A lot of old people think their are best than ours... *sigh*

Give babies shot or medicine for the painless.. Huh? I can´t image the doctor do that.

I know from most mothers how to calm babies down is...

Let babies suck on a cool teething ring. Best is put ring in the fridge. You can give your baby cold food he/she can chew. or give them cold cloth to chew...

I remember when my 2nd son pick and chew cloth from pillow when he was sleep when he was teething... He saw small cushion and chew shape of cushion cloth... (he don´t complaint about his teeth pains) but feel comfortable to chew pillow to "calm" his teething...

Yes, I agree that spirits could be good medicine sometimes... but not for child´s teething pain because it could kill them slowly if you carried on to use spirits to "calm" them down.

My Granny used Gin or vodka to nurse my injury knee. (I ran and fall down on the street - it scratch and blood... She used vodka on cotton wool to clean my knee when I was a little girl.

Did you know any medicines/medical are also including alcholic? That´s why I don´t go to doctor to get receipe for medicines... We use whiskey on cotton wool to clean my children´s scratch elbow, knee etc. instead of buy medicines etc from doctor´s receipes... My family doctor give us tips how to take care of ourselves & our children without buy any expensive medicines...

yea my grandmother did give the teaspoon of very warm whisky to one of her children or grandchildren when one was sick. the whiskey gave them more calm and slept better at nights. we are part of south....

nowday NyQuil is 50% alcohol which is pretty strong as almost same as whiskey. i still use my fave nyquil. it always gives me sleeping better in bed when i have colds.

Yes, you are right that a teething ring is a better method... This method will be my first choice if my baby has a problem. Good idea.

To be honest, the teething ring doesn't help very much , and same goes for Orajel....There are times they got soo fussy but at least it help just a bit, which is better than nothing at all you know...

But I refused to give my babies any amount of alcohol no matter what....

What would you do about the problem? I am curious to read your comment.

Actually, my three children aren't babies anymore, but when they were, I've given all three of them a teething rings and also rub some Orajel gel on their gums...It did help a bit but not as much as I expected it would....

Eww...glad he didn't die of alcohol poisoning. It's very dangerous for a toddler that age. Darn that relative!! He should have known better NOT to drink when he is around the toddlers while the mother is in labor.

Darn, some ppl are gettin' weirder nowadays. :(

Yikes! 'Shine can kill even an adult or leave them blind; there is no way it should be given to an infant!

No one really knows a "safe" level of alcohol for babies; therefore, they should never have any alcohol in their bodies.

I guess this part of the South isn't Deep enough; moonshine isn't very popular here now.

Just because something's been done a certain way for a long time doesn't make it right. Moms have to protect their children from well-meaning but hazardous people.

I think a doctor is likely to have just as good a motive as the local whiskey dealer.

You guys will laugh at this, but I know firsthand--having something to chew on is a GREAT help.

My 12-year molars did not come in when they were supposed to, but until I had surgery at almost 18 to fix that and to remove my wisdom teeth, they always tried. On days when I could really feel it, there was nothing better than to eat a popsicle and then chew on the stick until I felt better. Obviously you shouldn't give popsicle sticks to infants, but SOMETHING to chew on would be great. :)

And Reba--moonshine blinds people? That's the first I've ever heard of that! Though with the fact that it's homemade and impure, that doesn't surprise me...

"Methanol tastes and smells much like common alcohol (ethanol) and has been used as a substitute in illegal alcoholic beverages. In March 1997, three people died in northern Ontario as a result of methanol poisoning from a bad batch of moonshine.

As little as four milliliters can cause blindness and 80 to 150 milliliters can be fatal; about half a milliliter per kilogram of weight is deadly.

Drinking methanol causes effects similar to common alcohol, such as an upset stomach and dizziness, with the addition of pronounced vision problems. After these effects disappear, they reappear six to 30 hours later, only with much greater severity. severe symptoms tend to appear 18 to 24 hours after consumption...."
http://www.safety-council.org/info/OSH/methanol.htm

Here is the worst case:

"The use of methanol, a dangerous substance, in illicit liquor, was responsible for the hundreds of deaths in Nairobi's Mukuru kwa Njenga and Mukuru Kayaba slums, the worst alcohol-related tragedy in Kenya. More than 500 people were admitted to hospital with severe injuries including loss of eyesight."

True, that´s what mothers said the same but it´s less and better than worst and pain.

forget it.. ain't going any kind alcohol drops my child's mouth!

Hell no way... forget it..

I'd rather keep patience and rock'em my child smoothing chewable.. or sucking the pacifier til fall sleep.. make'm feel secure w/mother around arms.

btw rest of my children are big grown.. :D

i would agree with articles what they're talking about it!

but the babysitter dont allowed gives any baby or toddlers have drunk or alcohol its bad for children! im tell you its really dangerous for children and baby, toddlers and stay away from alcohol drink.

if i have children or babies i would intives my parents or my family to watch my children to watch the babysitter to stay away from alcohol drink they not allowed gives kids to drink like that!
