16 yrs old Dies During Her First Solo Drive, Believed To Be Texting

Wirelessly posted

I only had my learners permit for 1 month with drivers ed. Passed the test, got a pink waiver ran down to the DL office, and got my operators license. I drove every where after that.

Got my restricted during summer, took Driver's Ed, then had to wait until the next summer to get operator's license. Didn't have my first accident until I was in my 20's and it wasn't my fault. I've had 3 accidents and none were my fault. In each, I was already stopped at a light, and either got hit from behind, or once head-on. No injuries at all. The head-on, was more like a tap as that car was coasting along at less than 5 MPH.

My girls got their license when they were 16. I let them drive with me in the car for a full year. Then little by little they were allowed to drive themselves. I think it is crazy for people to buy a 16 year old a car and just let them drive wherever. Here in California they have to take professional driving classes unlike when I was in school where drivers ed was enough.

Children survived for years like this without a phone and lived to talk about it. You do what they did, tell someone to call for help or wait for help to arrive. I do agree though that in this age, having a cellphone is important for emergency situations given the world we live in. Maybe the safe alternative is finding a cheap phone that has no text, Internet, or anything but the most features.

Depends where you live. Hiking 15 miles to the next house on a sub zero night might kill you unless you brought gear. Not everyone lives in populated areas.

I was going back home and school was starting and parents had their cars where lined up next a sidewalk to let their kids off, and one small girl opened the door right into traffic to get out. I was going 20 miles as it was a school zone and was able to avoid hitting the door or child. I wanted to yell at the parent for allowing their child to get out of a car and into moving traffic. I know this kind off the topic , but a boy was hit right in front the school a few weeks ago right in the same spot . What is wrong with some parents??

This is true...true today and still true twenty or forty years ago. At least they didn't take a family out by hiking which can happen if you're texting while driving.

Unfortunately, if someone's determined to be an idiot, these stories will be common place because someone couldn't wait until they got home to check their messages. It's a tragedy any time someone dies foolishly.

The only problem with just taking away their driving licenses is that some of them will continue to drive recklessly without licenses. It already happens with DUI drivers and other drivers who have lost their licenses for a variety of reasons.

90s and today make no different... Why... I drove when I was 16.... with Game Boy. :aw:

I saw a kid texting while driving his motorcycle once. Of coarse he was also wearing shorts, sandals, t shirt and no helmet so I'm guessing he didn't last long.

What's really sad is, just today and also off and on over the last few weeks, I am seeing city police officers and county sheriff's officers who are texting and driving both on motorcycles and in cars.
