    Hearing person trying to understand

You were very lucky I guess. I was very frustrated having a dog that I loved and no vet felt like he was worth the time of day. Though I suppose in the long run it brought me into a culture I would never have thought about before him.

    Hearing person trying to understand

Freshtodeaf: in what capacity? Apparently the deafness in dogs is caused by a "white recessive gene" jrt, dalmations, samoyed, and pit bulls are known for it.

    Hearing person trying to understand

Perhaps you were granted better respect than I was. One vet even tried to make me feel like I was abusing him by not euthanizing him. What pets did you have? I know this might sound stupid, but was your vet young? The three I had issues with were all over 50 (as I might add am I). The one I...

    Hearing person trying to understand

Andy is a Jack Russell and a sweeter little guy you will never meet. He is such a gift to us and he has opened a whole new world for us. Things do happen in strange ways. Buffalo, I had looked at the site you sent me before when I first got Andy, trying to get as much information as...

how do the differently abled keep from being

sorry, I guess the whole quote didn't fit in the title. It was: Another question worthy of a thread is, how do the differently abled keep from being angry and bitter about bad experiences they have with ignorant "normal" people? Abby

how do the differently abled keep from being

Doug5 brought this up on a different thread and I would like to know how everyone feels about this and took his suggestion to start a new thread.

Using humor to break the ice

Ron, I think what you do is wonderful too. We all can use more humor in our life. Lipreading: Suppose a woman says: "This place is a mess! C'mon, You and I need to clean this place up, Your stuff is lying all over on the floor and you'll have no clothes to wear tomorrow unless...

Using humor to break the ice

One from a "hearie"..... Three men- a Cuban, a Russian, and a Deaf American meet on a train. The Cuban takes out a fine, fresh Havana cigar, lights it up, takes a few leisurely puffs, and tosses the unfinished cigar out the window. He explains, "We have so many cigars in Cuba, we can afford...

    Hearing person trying to understand

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Alicia, I really hope people aren’t being rude because you are hoh/deaf. I really had to consciously remember NOT to speak when we were on break at the class or any of the ASL get togethers we have. In my class only the teacher and one other student are...

    Hearing person trying to understand

I am a hearing person that got involved in the Deaf community and ASL initially because I have a deaf dog. I have discovered so much through my teacher and another student, and Shel on this site. I wonder what advice Deaf persons would offer to us hearing to enlighten other hearing persons...

who's hearie here on AD? (what are you here for?)

Liza, Thank you for the welcome. Shel, 32 years is a long time, but certainly better late than never. One of the people in our ASL class is there because she has a deaf nephew that is turning 18 this year and she wants to be able to wish him a happy birthday in ASL. I was somewhat...

who's hearie here on AD? (what are you here for?)

Hurrah for your husband! Is he hearing? What is sim-com? It must have been frustrating for your brother trying to communicate as a child. How did they communicate when you were not there? I think all families are weird in their own special way. My father was Polish and when he came to...

who's hearie here on AD? (what are you here for?)

Shel, I'm guessing if your brother went to deaf school at five, he learned ASL then. If you didn't learn it until 11 years ago, how were you interpreting? Do you have any other family members (hearing) that learned sign to communicate with you and your brother? Like aunts, uncles or...

who's hearie here on AD? (what are you here for?)

Thanks for being so honest. There is such a huge problem here with deaf enlightenment. I signed up for 8 classes before I finally got enrolled in one -- reason -- not enough enrollment to conduct a class. This is one thing I hope to change. For obvious reasons I couldn't enroll in a deaf...

who's hearie here on AD? (what are you here for?)

I'm guessing your parents are hearing. My biggest question is why hearing people are not automatically geared to learning how to communicate with deaf people. Especially when they are the parents of deaf children. My next I guess, is how us dumb hearing people can make the dumber hearing...

who's hearie here on AD? (what are you here for?)

Thanks for replying Shel. Did your parents learn sign to communicate with you? Do you think the questions I want to ask are intrusive? I so want to learn, but I don't want people to think I'm being rude. I know I'm ignorant of Deaf culture, but I want to learn without making anyone feel...

who's hearie here on AD? (what are you here for?)

I am new here and I am new to the deaf community. I am hearing with no previous experience with deaf persons. I was asked to babysit one of a litter of JRT puppies when their owners went on vacation. We noticed in a very short time that the puppy was deaf. I, of course, as an animal lover...

    Pit Bulls

100% owner issue. I know several pit bulls and have had one in the past, they can be just as wonderful and loving a pet as any breed. Here in Ontario they are now banned -- such annilhation is unforgiveable.
