    The psychology of hearing loss

Really Good Article Wow! Reading that article makes me feel better. I can DEFINITELY relate to the "stages of grief" and the "identity crisis." I was treated as if I were "stupid" and/or "crazy" for many. many years. I actually believed it for awhile! I have never really felt "whole" until...

FINALLY felt like I fit in

Wasn't Clear Oh, I meant that everyone was signing, just that two ladies also use their voices and two don't. One lady grew up without Sign, and the other is Deaf of Deaf of Deaf. The two others, who signed without voices, were somewhat older and I think went to Deaf schools. I enjoyed the...

FINALLY felt like I fit in

Yesterday, I went to a Deaf Church. I had visited there several times before. People were always friendly and welcoming. But, I never felt like I "really" belonged. Or if going to a Deaf church was the "right" thing for me. But, yesterday, I went the service and realized that I understood nearly...

If you are wearing "non-beige" hearing aids now....

I dressed up mine with EarGear I have "Plus 5" BTE's by ReSound. My audiologist told me they are some of the best on the market (they DO work well!) and that I have "plenty of reserve" if my hearing should ever change. Said they would last about 7 or 8 years. Anyway, I think they are kind of a...

    Bizarre experience with campus groups

Go figure Here is something that happened to me recently. A new (location) of a well-known bookstore chain opened recently in a nearby location. It was "opening day," so there were lots of people, etc. The place had bare floors (mostly), no sound-absorbing ceiling tile, and this LOUD music...

    Frustrated!

Wow! Hey, I really admire your perseverence! And your answer to that little girl was FANTASTIC!

    Never Good Enough

Pretty sure now I have done a lot of reading (about both CAPD AND AN/AD) since I last posted to this thread. A local ENT diagnosed me with SNLH and (accompanying) tinnitus. I looked up the specific diagnostic code (for the SNHL) and (according to that system) CAPD is excluded. People with AN/AD...

From a person that hates deaf people.

Feelings of "loss," but not hatred I find it interesting (and also rather sad) that this person has not yet come to terms with his own "hearing problem." Obviously, he has no desire to join the Deaf Community, but why the hate? If people want to sign, that's fine. If people choose NOT use Sign...

    I don't get it

Yesterday, I was informed that "there is no such thing as Deaf culture." By someone who is a mother to a Deaf (deaf?) daughter. I was told that her daughter is "more hearing-impaired" than I am. She had indicated previously that her daughter used an interpreter and so I naturally assumed that...

Do I have the right to refuse to use spoken english?

Very Confusing What gets me is that some places will get an interpreter for me, and then they will do it one time, but not the next. It creates a lot of anxiety for me, wondering if I will have "clear communication" with doctors, etc. Sometimes I can call and make my own appointments and ask...

    Never Good Enough

not sure I have CAPD Some interesting discussion. But, at this point, I am not quite sure whether CAPD is the correct diagnosis. I decided to try digital BTE's and they HELP A LOT! My tympanograms are still abnormal and and I have NO MEMR's (middle ear muscle reflexes). People with AN/AD can do...

    Never Good Enough

I feel like nothing I do is ever good enough to please my parents. They can't even sign "ILY." I feel SO rejected, like it is "not okay" to live as a Deaf/HOH person. I don't see what the "big deal" is, especially with my mother. It's like she is afraid for me to succeed, or something. I was...

Do you ever sleep with your HAs on (or off)

I Sleep With Mine In I often wear mine at night, because of tinnitus and just feeling uneasy (the world seems "too quiet without them). But, I use EarGear corded, so if they happen to come out of my ears, they are not lost. Also, the cats have a much harder time trying to carry them off to play...

Social customs and the isolated deaf?

I, too, have had difficulty with knowing the "proper" way to act/behave in the past. I suppose part of it is due to the "hearing problem"/communication difficuties and another part is due to the "Aspie-ness." I have AS (Asperger's Syndrome.) Clear access to info and clear communication are MUSTS.

    ITE Hearing Aids, advice?

Go With BTE's I DEFINITELY like BTE's much better! I wore ITE's and they were "okay" for that time in my life, but they ultimately "bit the dust" because of earwax. Anyway, good luck with your search!

    I love my new BTE's!

Royal Blue Ear Gear I have decided to be very open about using hearing aids and being HOH. Sometimes I wear "Deaf"-oriented T-shirts. I also have one that says, "Keep staring, I might do a trick.":D

    Ban on Hugging!

What Really Bothers Me I have been surprised and also very hurt many times, when (it seems like) Hearing people often (but not always) find something wrong with hugging. The word that is used most often is "inappropriate." As if something more than friendship were automatically implied. I often...

    I love my new BTE's!

More About The BTE's Hey, thanks for the support. My HAs are by ReSound and they are kind-of "flesh tone" I guess. BUT, I am getting some "Ear Gear" for them in royal blue, so that should make 'em plenty bright!:giggle:

    I love my new BTE's!

I just got new HAs last Friday and I just LOVE them! And I am NOT worried about anyone seeing them. I am not ashamed of my hearing loss anymore. I firmly identify as HOH now, and I am very comfortable with myself.
