Is it time to drive 55 again?

55 mph? Nooo way - awful too slow!

Don't want it to repeat like 1973 again. We, who drove in the pre-70 era, knew what it's like. Forget it! lol

I agree going 65 instead of 70 does indeed save some gas, however.

We can get around bit by ensuring that the tires are airtight and such like trading for smaller vehicle or engine etc.

With Gas Prices Rising and the Planet Warming, Is It Time To Drive 55 Again? | Autopia from Wired.com

Advocacy groups like drive55.org say rolling the speed limit back to 55 will save fuel, reduce pollution and save lives. It seems logical, but not everyone is convinced slower speeds bring any real benefit, and the debate is heating up.

I am like... oh boy... another debate going on... first, driving age(as well as drinking age) then this...

check the link above to read the Wired article, what do you think?

I do not want us to drive slower again... It should be other way around, let us drive faster to get to where we want to be and give us higher MPG or go green like hybird or such.

Discuss!

Law should make limits each type of vehicle.

Like semi truck speed limits at 55mph, SUV at 65, car at 75, motorcycle at 85, make fair due mpg and distance brake.

From what I hear, people don't follow any limit regardless.
If it was 90, people would want 95+

Remember one thing... if you go 90-95, for long periods of time, You are liable to blow the engine.... especially small engines, in small cars and trucks.... I 've seen 2 times, where 2 drivers blew their engines, going over 100 mph, on 2 different occasions... Just all the same, as a NASCAR driver blows his engine... like Jimmie Johnson, did during the closing laps of the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday!

Haha, well I know nothing of cars really, since I am not able to drive...
But I know that people will do 80+ in 75. I find it ridiculous, actually, to know of people pulled over on a 75 speed limit...

NASCAR engine suck and very simple.

V8, 5.7 liter and only 10k rpm, 200mph and blow up? That's weak.

F1 engine V8 2.4 liter and almost 20k rpm and 240mph. F1 is very stable than Nascar.

Well, yes...
But from what little I know, NASCAR cars have to conform to the body shape of select manufactured cars... while F1 cars are basically a seat on wheels, with some added stuff to keep the thing on the ground... a bit of a difference there.

But anyway.

I totally agree with you there.... Did you know that F1 cars idle around 5-6,000 rpms? That's just be standing on your engine that high, then it'd blow up!

Good for you... but lesson learned the hard way... No wonder so many people don't realize the lesson they will be taught, by the car and the way they drive them like that... Boom, either the engine, or tranny, and then hence lesson learned the hard way.....

gmcman yea.. learn lesson is hard way sometime.. but i do learn anyway.. i always want to learn.. sad alot of people dont do that..

it just all about experience.. first time is something always to get taste of what .. or will be or something like that.. you know i mean..
