Gold-Plated MacBook Air

Myself. There is only 10 screws at bottom of MBA and take under 10 min. It's easy replace like the spark plug for car, truck, and tractor.

I've done that on my Acer laptop trying to find out if I can swap the ATI 200M chipset to better one. I had to unscrew 20+ screws from my acer. It's alot of work BUT I couldn't even pry off the mobo from the upper shell!!!!!! I was afraid to do further to break precious mobo. I tried to look around to see if I'm missing 1 or 2 overlooked screws. I didn't see any so I assumed there are clips hidden somewhere so I just forget it and put it back altogether GRRRR!!!

MY laptop battery is removable from bottom using the slide lever that's it.

I sure hope that Apple would redesign that it take less screws to remove battery. Or slide out battery from side which is much easier to swap for fresh one!!. Wish Apple had common sense for travellers who don't have place to recharge battery!!

I'm pretty sure I read that the battery is non-user replaceable. If so, then it's likely you would void the warranty if you replace the battery yourself.

It's not really about what you can do. It's about the warranty that matters.

Do you know how long battery last? How many year for warranty?

Do the math.

Yes, non-user replaceable is not for anyone unlike me.

Like I did mod my car for upgrade and I knew it will void the warranty then I take my car to dealer for check and they dont noticed anything and still have warranty. Depent HOW good you do the job.

chipset can't replace because it's part of motherboard. If you have GPU with port then you are lucky and easy to replace but parts is not easy to find for new gpu. All chipset soldering on the motherboard.

C/S

Yes its very careful. But fun when I had to unscrew 17+ screw from my laptop and looking around like curious where rams, graphic card and cpu are at before I able to upgrade it.

C/S stands for co-sign.. ;)

It's replaceable!! I spoke with Acer Rep two years ago when i returned my laptop for DVD drive replacement (DVD konked out on my first day of usage!! GRRR but at least it's under warranty that time). I asked him about graphic chipset. He said it can be upgraded ATI Xpress 200M to ATI Xpress 1100 or 1300. He told me that he won't help me how to take it apart until the warranty is over. LOL

I seem that you never ride airline? They do not have any cig lighter plug.

I did ride airplane many times. But I DID read magazine that there are special adapter that can plug in airplane's socket (It doesn't look like cig lighter socket tho). I DO NOT see it where I was sitting. I would have to ask steward where it is. I am not sure if inverter is allowed through TSA because it's a step up power source that can shock passenger if they spilled drink on it..??

I checked at newegg. Not good for airline. They do not have any cig lighter plug.
Just good for car or RV.

Yes they do. It's on the right side (on newegg pix of adapter). You'll have to ask beautiful stewardess where are the 12v dc socket on airplane. Don't ask the Blondie! LOL (kidding)

Hmm. Model?

Hmm. Model?

Acer Aspire 5040 Wlmi

My Laptop is not really popular model cuz many are commonly either 5050 or 5030. Many online Memory configurator missed out certain model.

I did saw 2 or 3 similiar model Acer 5040s and it have either 1.6Ghz Turion 64 or 2.0 Ghz Turion64 , some have Xpress 300M, some had Xpress 1100M. I think I saw Xpress 1300M too.

My laptop box had list say 1.6 ghz but when I powered up laptop, checked it's BIOS, it showed 1.8 Ghz. The manufacter changed it without notice.

1.8Ghz AMD Turion 64
60GB hdd 4500 rpm (or was it 5400)
Atheros AR5005 54g wireless miniPCI card (no bluetooth boo hoo!! But can use Broadcom wireless miniPCI w/ bluetooth)
AC97 onboard sound
ATI Xpress 200M chipset
Windows XP Home SP2
15.4 wxvga LCD Crystalbright
4 USB 2.0 ports
1 monitor port
1 Modem port
1 Ethernet port
1 DVD 8x RW slim drive
Power jack
Li ION 6 pack battery (dead now).
Charger
Front Wireless and Bluetooth on/off buttons (I hates it to my gut cuz it won't work w/ Linux but there are work around tho.)

So compare the configuration with other Aspire 5040 model, you'll see graphic chipset are different.

Highlander, can you post with the attachment real-life photo of macbook air in your own hands and smile face as real person on thread for REAL, please?? You can prove me that, don't you!?

Xpress 300M is UMA. No way to replace/upgrade it. Only replace whole motherboard.

Any GPU with PCI Express then it can replace.

interesting. That's somthing I can't see. If my wife have her own laptop, I would have gut to take my lappy all apart to see what in it. LOL. The technician said that graphic chipset is upgradeable but he can't help me since my lappy was under warranty at that time. Now It's out of warranty, I could call Acer tech and ask him to give me details on how to take it all apart and upgrade.

SO let me see if technician is telling the truth LOL.

I don't see much graphic chipset upgrade in Ebay tho.

GPU chipset in 98% of laptop market are soldered to logic board, that means you have replace on all of logic board, that's very advanced and more tougher for average users.

CPU can be upgrade in some laptops (in case if there's socket), most mid to high end model, such as Alienware and Gateway FX.
