This made me very angry .....

China has secretly fired powerful laser weapons designed to disable American spy satellites by "blinding" their sensitive surveillance devices, it was reported yesterday.

The hitherto unreported attacks have been kept secret by the Bush administration for fear that it would damage attempts to co-opt China in diplomatic offensives against North Korea and Iran.

Sources told the military affairs publication Defense News that there had been a fierce internal battle within Washington over whether to make the attacks public. In the end, the Pentagon's annual assessment of the growing Chinese military build-up barely mentioned the threat.

"After a contentious debate, the White House directed the Pentagon to limit its concern to one line," Defense News said.

The document said that China could blind American satellites with a ground-based laser firing a beam of light to prevent spy photography as they pass over China.

According to senior American officials: "China not only has the capability, but has exercised it." American satellites like the giant Keyhole craft have come under attack "several times" in recent years.

Although the Chinese tests do not aim to destroy American satellites, the laser attacks could make them useless over Chinese territory.

The American military has been so alarmed by the Chinese activity that it has begun test attacks against its own satellites to determine the severity of the threat.

Satellites are especially vulnerable to attack because they have predetermined orbits, allowing an enemy to know where they will appear.

"The Chinese are very strategically minded and are extremely active in this arena. They really believe all the stuff written in the 1980s about the high frontier," said one senior former Pentagon official.

There has been increasing alarm in parts of the American military establishment over China's growing military ambitions.

Military experts have already noted that Chinese military expenditure is increasingly designed to challenge American military pre-eminence by investing in weaponry that can attack key systems such as aircraft carriers and satellites.

At the same time, China is engaged in a large-scale espionage effort against American high-tech firms working on projects such as the multibillion-pound DD(X) destroyer programme.

Several spy rings have been cracked and the FBI is increasing the number of counter-intelligence staff tracking the Chinese effort.

The Daily Telegraph is a TABLOID. In other words, they make up news. If it's not on CNN, then it really didn't exist.

I did not know it was a tabloid. I am not British at all so I would not have known but that is pretty serious weight to be throwing around and that article upset me greatly. President Clinton should never have made a deal with China. When did the chinese made products flood the U.S. market ?

One word : in 1992

Well, that must have been George H. W. Bush then. After all, Clinton didn't take office until 1993.

Engineer indicted on spying

December 12, 2007

By Bill Gertz -

A former U.S. defense contractor spent more than two years working with China's military to design and test a radar-evading component for a new Chinese cruise missile as part of an espionage conspiracy, according to a federal indictment.

The indictment of Noshir S. Gowadia, an Indian-born engineer, was submitted to U.S. District Court in Hawaii in October and states he worked closely with a Chinese government agent and missile technicians to illegally supply the stealth-missile technology during six visits to China between 2003 and 2005.

"The defense services performed were in the form of design, test support and test-data analysis of advanced propulsion system technologies and low observable technologies for the specific purpose of assisting the [People's Republic of China] in designing, testing and analyzing a low-observable exhaust nozzle, optimized for significant reduction in the infrared heat signature, for a PRC cruise missile," according to the indictment, which has not been disclosed before.

The new indictment added two additional counts to two earlier federal charge sheets in the case and states Mr. Gowadia conspired with Wong Tong-ming, an agent working for Beijing's Foreign Experts Bureau, and others to supply defense technology secrets for cash.

The men set up "covert e-mail addresses" that were used to send classified defense data as part of the cruise missile conspiracy, according to the indictment.

Mr. Gowadia worked at Northrop Grumman from 1968 to 1986 and participated in developing the still-secret propulsion system used on the B-2 stealth bomber. He later worked as a defense contractor.

The indictment provides the first details on how Mr. Gowadia purportedly helped build China's new land-attack cruise missile in exchange for $110,000.

China's stealth cruise missile is a new strategic weapon that is a key element of China's major military build-up.

"The new PLA land attack cruise missile ... has stealth shaping features similar to the late models of the U.S. Tomahawk land attack cruise missile," said Richard Fisher, a specialist on the Chinese military with the International Assessment and Strategy Center.

"Gowadia's expertise in infrared signature suppression would have helped the PLA to make this cruise missile even less detectable, especially by infrared sensors."

According to the indictment, Mr. Gowadia designed the new missile to be capable of evading U.S. air-to-air missiles. The indictment revealed that Mr. Gowadia's work on the exhaust nozzle between April 2004 and June 2004 used U.S. data to show the exact "lock on range" of the new Chinese missile from a pursuing U.S. air-to-air missile.

The new indictment includes 21 counts of conspiracy to commit espionage, violations of arms export control laws, unlawful retention and transmission of defense information, money laundering and tax evasion.

Mr. Gowadia pleaded not guilty to the charges. His trial is set for Oct. 7.

Actully I don't blieve that because it not enough proof and the annocuments about disable the american. I like the cold hard facts. SO I don't think that gonna happen since we are peace with China. US and China have no qurrel.

True or not, I've never let China off my radar.

The sleeping dragon awakens.

What do you consider for "proof" and "cold hard facts." What kind of a source would you believe?

Even if its true its called counter-intelligence. Would you feel upset if the USA did something similar? I wouldn't and I am an American that served this country. The best response would be for the US to modify their systems to not be affected by such a thing. Counter the counter so to speak. All is fair in love and war.

We do the same thing, yes. We need to know what's going on in the world. And those who work in counterintelligence accept the risks.

But we also have to come down hard on those who sell us out, especially when our own citizens turn traitor.

I have a feeling USA and any other counties would do that because that call "Sell-out" and I would bet my money on that.

the fact whether this story is true or not is irrelevant, what annoys the countries of the world is America spying on the them then crying wolf when the people do something about it, even if this story was true, what did china do wrong? nothing, they were only protecting themselves from being spied on.

most Americans don't understand why alot of countries hate them, well that was one reason! and for the record I don't hate the US, I'm scottish and my family have fought alongside the US in 3 wars, but American arrogance does annoy me, and it will be their downfall.

for example, Iran with nuclear weapons is a dangerous situation, Irans response was that they simply want nuclear power stations to bring their country up to the 21st century, No I don't belive them either, but the diplomatic resonsonse should have been, "ok discountinue your program and the US and UK will launch a joint directive to build and run nuclear power stations to power your country, but we won't give you the technology"

not the US response of "stop building or we will bomb you", the US is seen as being nothing more than a world bully and the Americans are blind to it, and believe any b****** the media or worse, government feeds them.

no I don't for a minute think Iran would stop their nuclear program, but with a decent offer on the table as an alternative the US would get more world support in the sanctions and possible military action in future, but the US has zero diplomacy which is why they get no world support.

and if anyone dares question the US what do they do? launch a childish attack eg. if it wasn't for us you would have lost the 2nd world war, come on grow up, get real and try seeing the picture from the point of a citizen from the countries you are bullying.

CNN.com - CNN Political Ticker Elder Bush nixes Clinton trip idea «

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former President George H.W. Bush has shot down his successor Bill Clinton’s idea of a diplomatic mission under a Hillary Clinton presidency that would send him and other notables abroad to assure other nations that “America is open for business and cooperation again.”

The move came one day after Bill Clinton made the suggestion on the campaign trail in South Carolina, in response to a question from a supporter about his wife’s “number-one priority” upon reaching the White House.

In a statement sent to CNN Tuesday afternoon, former President Bush’s chief of staff Jean Becker said that he “wholeheartedly supports the President of the United States, including his foreign policy. He has never discussed an ‘around-the-world-mission’ with either former President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton, nor does he think such a mission is warranted since he is proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy.

“President Bush is excited about several of the excellent Republican candidates running for president, and looks forward to discussing their candidacy once the Republican nominee is determined.”

In the past, many nations have tried diplomacy and, well, it just doesn't always get the right results. I'm not advocating war, though, I do find "diplomatic measures" ridiculous with certain countries.

I wish the United States could just walk softly while carrying a big stick. Unfortunately, that policy is shot to heck.
