As mentioned in this thread two Star Trek fan films are having subtitles created (Intrepid and Hidden Frontier).

Although primarily created for foreign language translation, we have tried to build in off camera items etc. As I am an amateur at this, we would welcome feedback as to if it was any good.

----

The Star Trek : Hidden Frontier subtitled versions are now available to download from Hidden Frontier.

Go to the Episodes page and follow the instructions for downloading. Each episode lists a "With Subtitles" version. There are 50 episodes available, all with English and German subtitles. You'll need Quicktime 7 to use them at their best although VLC will work for the English ones.

Horray!

Thanks for the announcement, I've been looking forward to this for a while.

I enjoyed watching the first Intrepid episode, the English subtitles were nice overall but I'd like mention two small problems I found.

1) When watching "Heavy Lies the Crown" apostrophes do not always display correctly, and it's inconsistent. It looks like you used two different characters and one of them isn't "crossing over" correctly. (almost every time "S'Ceris" is displayed correctly but often all other words look like "you?re" and "I?ve" )

2)Often there are too many words displayed at a time.
one example:
"Gentlemen, please. This is an argument for another time. I appreciate starfleet's efforts on our behalf but my decision is made."

This would be much better spit in half (between "..another time." and "I appreciate..") when in doubt, separate the sentences, we can read fast :)

3) -- I thought of this as I was typing number two. when I watch the subtitles, some times there is a line with only one word, and thus, dialog that should only take two lines takes 3 or 4. I suspect that you might have a bunch of extra "carriage returns" in the original text file. It might not be hard to take those out, might be good to take all of them out.. so not really a problem but something that can help readability.

For viewing ST:Intrepid with subtitles:

I downloaded the latest VLC (0.8.6c)

I tweaked the settings for subtitles
(Preferences>Video>Subtitles/OSD>Text Renderer)
Text default color : Olive
Relative font size : Large
Font Effect : outline

I find it much easier to read the subtitles with my settings this way,
(I tried taking screenshots but it just dosn't work. :( )

I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate English subtitles! I hope you find my feedback useful.

I tested the subs with QT and VLC and did not see this problem (except on the foreign subs with VLC which is documented). I will have to try your settings and see what happens.

My dilemma. I've found these films to be very talky and the documentation and help I've been reading mentions all subs should be on the screen for at least 2 seconds if possible. Also, we're trying to reach two audiences with the subs - D/HOH and Foreign language.

I will have to see what I can do about this in the future. Not sure how successful I will be.

When being created all the subs were setup for maximum of 3 lines and checked for this sort of behaviour. What I did not consider is that you can amend your sub settings for size and colour. I don't think I can ever correct this behaviour as VLC renders the subs according to the settings at the time. Less words in a sub may help but see previous points.

Thanks for the feedback, not sure what I can do to help but I will think of these for future efforts.

One thing you might try to improve things (I know you have you favourite settings though!) is to play them in Quicktime at full screen.

You talking about Star Trek: Hidden Frontier?

It's a fan-made webisode. Webisodes are episodes of shows made for online by fans of Star Trek.

I've watched the first season and it looks interesting. I'll watch the next season soon. :)

I just finished watching the entire series... whew!

Really interesting storyline. I enjoyed it.

They did sorta go a bit overboard with the relationship issues. This is a Star Trek show, not a romantic show.

Wow, that was a marathon run !

I guess there are some parts that get a bit soapy but you could argue that is simply character development over the seven seasons. Also, the early seasons didn't really have a story arc, they were more standalone.

New series starts next week - Star Trek Odyssey.

If you get moment, it would be good if you could post an update on their forum (to ensure they know it was worth subbing :) )

I think they had a hardware fault, downloads should now be possible again.

Also, just realised I put the wrong heading in the link, it is of course Odyssey not Helena Chronicles. Helena Chronicles is released on New Year's day but it will take a bit of time to sub.

Never mind. I was able to download it a hour later. ;)
