The Modesto Bee | Police should learn basic signing

In reply to "Why do cops need a foreign language?" (July 19, Letters): Yes, the deaf need to do whatever it takes to make their lives easier in a hearing world, such as putting a "deaf driver" sticker on the backs of their cars.

The letter indicated that the deaf should learn English, instead of the police learning sign language. Some deaf people do not talk at all; therefore, learning any language, English included, is out of the question.

The police can learn basic signs for what they need until they get an interpreter. It is not like the deaf are coming from another country and expecting people to speak their language. Meet the deaf halfway.

i'm aware in some states.. the law requires a police officer to hire an ASL interpreter once you're pulled over and request for an interpreter.. then a police officer have to call for one..

that's not a federal law.. but state law.. here in minnesota they do that. but the law? i dunno.. it happen to a friend of mine before.

i heard few states requires that.. but the negative side is you have to wait couple more min.. for an interpreter to arrive.

Well, shucks, why don't all police officers learn every language in the world, that way, when they stop someone, they can begin speaking that person's language. Gee, Pete, that sounds like it makes sense!

You've got to be kidding? ADA law covers interpreters. The police have enough to do already, why pile on a required language work load?

My university teaches a sign language course for the law enforcement community.

Not to go off topic, but my son and a friend of his were driving in the city, and an officer pulled them over to give them a warning about speeding. My son's friend sign "Deaf" and "Don't understand". Cop just smiled and started signing. Turns out he was a CODA! Cracked me up! And the boys learned a lesson about trying to use their deafness to get away with anything!

I dont understand this statement...now deaf people are unable to learn any languages? Oh boy!

I think more police officers are learning basic or advanced signs. At least it is here.

In my hometown in Tennessee, two of my childhood friends are police officers and my ugh, so-called cousin is a a deputy/patrol Sergeant. I am pretty sure they still remember some (if not all) signs and will try use them whenever they run into deaf people. :)

I'm very happy to learn that.
