Have you donated or received bone marrow?

Thanks for your links. It seems that I could donate blood in USA as thyroxine isn't on the list drugs would prevent that. I'll have to see if that's true Blood donations in the UK too.

I don't know about donating bone marrow though as it doesn't give a list of forbidden drugs for that.

The bone marrow donation might be more of a case-by-case situation that also depends on the recipient's condition. :dunno:

I am surprised about the baby's umbilical cord blood. I don't think that George Bush appreciates that. Of course, I do respect people who need one using the umbilical.

My neighbor's son who is 23 years old has a leukemia. I really don't know him that well, but I have seen him mowing the lawn. I was told that he has to live for 7 to 8 months. He is Peru. His family and cousins in Peru are not matched... I helped his mother to put up some fliers for the marrow donor. She set it up at a police station. I passed around the police station two weeks ago to see anybody show up. I was shocked that there were no cars on the parking a lot. I am being to wonder that people are afraid to go to the police station. She also put his name on a National Marrow Donor. It is not a good new.

I am thinking about the prisoners. Do you think that it is a good idea for them to give a donor?

Is it very painful to extract the bone marrow? I heard about it with a negative story.

Are you looking for someone to donate it to you?

I Emailed them and got this response. So it looks like I can donate blood after all. If all goes well I will try and donate bone marrow next. I'm also going to be an organ donor so if I die then all my bits can be used to help other people.

Thank you for your recent email.

It may be possible for you to give blood whilst taking Thyroxine,
providing the following applies to you.

If you have had surgery, you must be completely healed and recovered,
and have no further follow ups. If you did have surgery and were in a
hospital for 6 nights, then you must not give blood for at least 6
months.

The reason for your Thyroid condition must not be part of any other
health problems or linked to Cancer.

If you have had any Radioactive Iodine Therapy. it must have been 6
months or over since this.

If you have had any anti-thyroid treatment with anti-thyroid tablets eg
Carbimazole, it must have been 2 years since you finished taking
these.

Whilst starting the medication called Thyroxine or Levothyroxine, the
GP will often have to change the dose until a suitable level for you is
found. This dosage level must have been the same for at least 3 months
before you give blood.

If there is anything we can help with or that you would like to discuss
further, please do not hesitate to contact us again. We would be
pleased to help if we can.

Great! :)

I used to donate blood until they couldn't get it out anymore. :( That is, they literally can't squeeze enough out of my veins to fill up even 1/2 a pint bag. I have very small veins that don't want to give up the blood. Sometimes it takes hours (and many pokes) just to get enough for my blood tests. Ugh!

I'm organ donor; hopefully, I will still have some useful organs left to give after I die. :)

Ugh!! I recalled a nurse if I drink more juice or water, and it makes my veins wider.

I went to donate blood. I was told over the phone on Monday that it would be just to turn up. I did so and was told I couldn't give blood after all :pissed: Aparantly they were supposed to have sent a letter to explain why but I've not read it yet. They are comming up with the most flimsy excuses ever like saying how would they communicate with me if I was feeling faint, they can't let me give blood because the information I have to read before hand is yet to be put into braille. Even after I'd told them I could read print with a CCTV and there is one at the public library which is only a few yards away but aparantly there is some stupid rule that says the information must be read with a nurse present. I was really upset as I have my own reasons to want to donate. I like to make myself useful and could do with the good karma.

I would also like to donate organs too.

haven't experience that

but my dad and 2 other family friends donated their bloods for my surgery when i was 2 years old so i am their blood recipient
