Postal Worker Steals Thousands Of DVDs

Netflix Notified Post Office About High Number Of Missing DVDs

POSTED: 7:14 am EDT July 3, 2007

HOUSTON -- A federal judge in Houston has ordered a year and a-half in prison for a now-former postal clerk in a DVD-by-mail theft investigation.

Authorities accused 53-year-old Anthony Zuniga of Houston of swiping thousands of movies from the mail system.

Zuniga was convicted of two counts of mail theft by a postal employee. He also was sentenced Monday to three years probation and must pay a $4,000 fine.

Netflix last year notified the U.S. Postal Service about an unusually high number of DVDs missing from a certain post office box.

Investigators said Zuniga was stationed at that center. Prosecutors said surveillance showed Zuniga stealing 122 DVDs from the post office.

On Aug. 3, 2006, inspectors observed Zuniga dumping a tub of Netflix and Blockbuster DVDs into a plastic bag and then leaving the postal facility with the plastic bag. Zuniga's vehicle was stopped as it was exiting the parking lot and inspectors found the plastic bag containing the DVDs on the floor of the vehicle. The bag contained 122 DVDs.

After an interview with postal inspectors, Zuniga consented to a search of his home. Inside the home, inspectors found 8,177 stolen pieces of mail -- including 5,937 Netflix DVDs and 1,497 Blockbuster DVDs.

Zuniga, who had been a Postal Service employee since 1974, resigned his job after being caught stealing the DVDs.

Damn... that's fucked up!

Good thing it didn't happen here. Heh!

that not good!

but need know dont steal any people's mail!!!!!!!!!! but he need learn his lesson!

I remember a show on television where this couple noticed a huge decrease in their mail. So, they set up a camera from their house to watch their mailbox.

The video showed the mailwoman delivering the mail... then hours later... returning in her own car to steal the mail.

When the police raided the mailwoman's house, they found a shitload of stuff stolen from other people's mail as well. Whew!

It is stupid for Netflix to mail DVDs....

DUMB business... who comes up with that organization?

i never send to Netflix and blockbuster for order dvd but im usually wal-mart order dvd best for me than netflix and blockbuster but i know netflix and blockbuster is best dvds in the globe.

I like better go to Blockbuster store and get some movies I want...
Instead of waiting for DVDs to come in my mail, I hate all of that waiting.
Especially when they send me DVDs that are SOOO DIRTY... my poor
DVD machine has to be clean....
Then you have tell Netflix to send another DVD cause that DVD is
scratchy....

Don't you get mad when movie frozen at the end of the movie, UGH!!!!

I rarely have problems with my DVD that I get from Blockbuster Online. From time to time, there will be a broken DVD... but I don't let that stop me since the DVDs I get in the mail can be dropped off at the store in exchange for free rentals.

For me, it's $18 a month for 13 free in-store rentals... which actually costs $52 for 13 in-store rentals. Can't beat that! ;)

Yeah.... but when I go blockbuster store, I just get the one I really want to watch... Cause I don't watch a lot of movies....

If I want to watch Dreamgirls.... that the only movie I want to see....

But I don't want to rent 13 movies in one month... cause there is nothing
else I want to watch but Dreamgirls....

I just go to Blockbuster store every 3 times a year.... depend on
the MUST SEE film I wanna see.

I use the online rentals for television shows. Right now, I'm watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. :)

wow that sucks. I'm surprised it happened. we rent dvds from netflix to watch movies time to time. so far, we haven't had any problems. we pay 15 a month for 2 at a time rentals, you return the 2 movies and u get 2 others in the querty list that you selected what moves you want next. we don't have to worry about late fees, cost, etc. its cheaper than renting from the store.

we don't have cable tv so we watch dvd movies instead.

Whats wrong with them? They get great pay and still steal? Plus they are UNIONS! FUCK unions! They got too much protection on workers. Those scumbag workers should get fired instantly, but since they are unionized, they have to go proper process and give tons of chance before getting fired.

CORRECT! That's why we still stick with BBV :)

I never had a problem with mail from BBV. Time time movie didn't work, I had to exchange that and other time one dvd broke, dunno how it happen so I exchanged it also with no problem or no question asked!

I've been a member of Blockbuster Online since October 2004. Since then, I've only received 3 broken DVDs and 1 badly scratched DVD. Other than that, they've all been just perfect.

There were times when a few DVDs didn't work on my DVD player, but that was because of my DVD player... not the DVDs. Of course, I had a back-up DVD player that could play them anyway. ;)

Not true here. They would automatic fired them and arrested them immediately if they caught stealing. I went thru the training and warned us if we steal people's mails, we go to jail. Union has no power over those theives.

Yes I agree, I love it. Cheapest so far.

WOW! That is so strange. I just had to call my postmaster because a lot of our Netflix movies are lost in the mail. Netflix can put accounts on hold if you have too many missing movies. I PAY FOR THIS SERVICE! I'm not the one losing them in the mail, but they can punish me for it. But reading that someone, a Federal employee, stole mail and movies, makes me :pissed:

I love Netflix. It's a great idea. When you say things, it doesn't automatically make them true. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but you're usually forceful and in-our-faces about it.

I dont use Netflix or Blockbuster - I just go to the movie store on the way home from work and drop the movie off in the drop slot on the way to work the next day. Or - I go to the wal-mart bargain bin and get DVDs for cheap.
