what's your answer?

without calculator, I said it's 9.

I look up on different calculator*, it said 7, but other said 9.

*source: mac widge calculator, mac application calculator, my treo, friend's sidekick, google's calculator

please choice which one you believe it should belong... it's easy math but most agrue what you think it should belong.

you can check on different calculator and it answer different.
 
well.. here's how it's done.. always do the multiplication first, and then addition.. so the answer is 7.

1+2*3=x
1+(2*3) =x
1+6=x
therefore.. 7=x

Multiply first and add just as bearbeauty solved it
 
It depends on the calculator you're using.

If you're using a calculator where each step is calculated as you go along, you'll have...

1 + 2 = 3

3 * 3 = 9

If you're using a calculator that lets you put in everything before calculating the results, it will follow this order... multiply/divide... then add/subtract.

In this case, the problem goes...

1 + 2 * 3 =

1 + ( 2 * 3 ) =

1 + ( 6 ) = 7
 
As per mathematic rule, Multiple comes first, then addition! I still remember that rule from Mr. Moose!

Well it depends on how you do the math. If you want to add first before muplity for some reason, then it's 9, but if you are doing the homework for the college, then it's 7 as following of PEMDAS like Texan_Guy said.
 
indeed I remember way back high school. My teacher alway keep tell us to keep old fashion use penical and paper. Never trust calculator. I was in college professional math teacher said same thing. Now I got see why mix up between 7 or 9. With old fashison write on paper answer 7 for calcualtor answer 9.

It's true. My teacher told me same thing. I remember she said When your calculator is break and how to solve the problem by yourself?
