Was reading an Internet blurb that said the new NBC remake of the Bionic Woman will have a deaf character in Jaime Sommers' teenage sister. Unlike the original Bionic Woman, Jamie will have a "bionic eye" instead of a "bionic ear" and her sister will be deaf. Rumour has it the sister will have an operation and get the "bionic ear." Anyone know anything about this?

Interesting. I didn't care for the guy who wrote the blurb saying the sister shouldn't be deaf. Meh to him.

I think he was trying to say why have yet another hearing actress fake being deaf (Mae Whitman). He was also complaining having a deaf sister or deaf girlfriend is the "latest thing" giving Jericho (Shoshannah Stern) as an example.

Because the deaf character on Bionic Woman is played by a hearing actress that's probably the where the idea the show will have her get a bionic ear and suddenly hear and speak normally came from.

Anyway, whatever that person's opinion, it is not right to have a hearing actress play a deaf character. I thought we got past that bad typecasting long ago, but apparently not.

Interesting... I have not heard anything about this.

wonder if it is related to the cochlear implants to become bionic woman. :)

Ah, I don't necessarily mind a hearie playing a deafie if it's played right... no more than I mind Americans playing Japanese people in Heroes. But it has to be done right. Silly if someone gets a bionic ear and can suddenly talk. :(

I guess we'll wait and see what happens.

I don't watch Jerico and didn't know there was a deaf character on it.

ahem, there will be no deaf character on new "Bionic Woman"

Sackhoff Is Original Bionic Woman
Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff told SCI FI Wire that she will play the original cyborg in NBC's Bionic Woman SF series. "I play Sarah Corvus," Sackhoff said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles on May 10. "She's the original bionic woman. The first bionic woman. She doesn't let anyone forget it. And she's kind of gone off the reservation. She's a little crazy."

Sackhoff is my fav actress cuz I love BSG!

EDIT: the link in first post seems vague on deaf reference. hmm.. I'll have to wait to see what's the deal.

Well, this fits with what the guy said about her nemsis being named Sarah, so it could still all be mostly the same.

Will this deaf character be talking or signing? Since its played by a hearing person, I have a feel if this deaf character ends up talking like a hearing person, then nothing will happen, but, if the deaf character signs only, then

BOOM!

from the deaf absolutists!

My guess is that she'd talk. Hearing people not skilled in sign who just do it for acting tend to not sign well. It's as if they. are. talking. one. word. at. a. time. Which isn't natural. Signing, like talking, when done fluently is very fluid. I remember Gil Grissom on CSI saying his mother was deaf and then signing. He did okay, but it was awkward.

Boult, there is a bit of a misunderstanding about the characters for the Bionic Woman. Sarah Corvus is the original Bionic Woman, and Jaime Sommers comes along as the newer and more improved Bionic Woman.

The deaf sister's name is Becca Sommers and she is played by Mae Whitman.

Here's two more "legit" resource verifying the deaf sister character.

--The remake of Bionic Woman frankly seems ludicrous to me, and, judging from the chuckling around me in the cheap seats, I was not the only one who felt this way. Minor points awarded for having the main character’s deaf sister listening to the MC5 in the trailer, though. (Yes, you read that sentence correctly.) It does look like they spent a bajillion dollars on it, though, for good or ill.

Ooh... they're remaking the television show!? That's great! I used to watch some of the old shows.

I wonder if they will also remake The Six Million Dollar Man?

No idea when it will start. I haven't seen anything about it on mainstream telly like Entertainment Tonight or Extra. Has anyone?
