7-Year-Old Forced to Take Bus 3 Times

Please re-read this quote as I was reply to this one, as I agreed 7 years old is far too young to travel on their own.

11 years old is old enough to travel IMO, as it will teach them to learn to be independant, and they are old enough to know what to do, not talk to strangers.

Today most 11 years old have their own mobile cellular phones with them which make life easier for parents.

What age do you think is ideal for a child to travel on their own without adult to the city for a day trip.... I wonder???????

I didn't say that I thought 11 years old was too young, I only said that 7 years old is too young. I should have clarified that. There is a big difference between a 7 years old and a 11 years old.

As for the trip into the city....maybe 12 or 13 years old, and preferably not alone...maybe with a couple of their friends, like a group thing. If school is nearby and only requires 1 or maybe 2 buses and not too long/too far, 11 years old is ok, but rather with a friend, too. But it all depends on a lot of things.

Re-read number 15 what I said after I replied yours.

OMG...if that 7 year old was my child and we were told he had to take the city bus to school, I would have a coronary AND an aneurysm!!! :pissed:
7 years old is too fucking young to be on a city bus by himself!!!

I wouldn't be surprised. :smoking:

I certainly hope they get this fixed soon. I wouldn't even allow my 13 yr-old-to travel alone on public transportation in NYC, much less a 7 yr-old. That is ridiculous! If I were one of those parents, I would simply keep my child home from school until the problem were fixed and DARE them to fine me or send me to court. They would have one hell of a law suit to contend with then.

Not my children, I brought my 16 years old a cell phone but I will not buy my 11 years old one, he is too young

Someone said that 11-13 years old are old enough to ride on public transportation ?...Well not my children, I won't allow them to ride the public transportation alone either...so I'm with Eve on this one...

I'm awared that some of you had rode on a public bus or train during the old days but things change now, not every child who is 11 owns a cell phone...

Right on Eve. I wouldnt send my kids on the bus at age 11!! No way!! The kids can be lost in the middle of NYC, or can be kidnapped. No way!! Its so wrong to have the 7 yrs old boy go on a public bus without parents. Like Eve said to keep the kids home till they fix it. I would do the same thing. Children are the priority thinig in my life (I dont have a kid but just if I have one)

Yes Angel, when I was 11 to 14 yrs old, I took a bus, train, cab by myself without my mother. Old times was like less crime, less kidnap, less child molesters. Now its EVERYWHERE!! No way to have 11 - 12 yrs old kids go on the bus with or without cellphone.

Perhaps USA is unsafe country for children to live, in Melbourne, its pretty safe, - depend which town, countries I believe??

I saw a tourist wearing a T-shirt print saying "I survived in NYC transport" or something like that?

NYC isn't safe for little ones to be out alone, that's for sure. I agree with Eve, Redhead and Angel. I would never let my 11 year old kid go out to NYC alone.. its not just NYC, It's all over the world. A young child shouldn't be out there alone. they should have a couple of friends or group together.

even kids having a cell phone doesn't save lives! cell phones can be helpful but it surely doesn't 100% save lives.

Honestly, no where in the world is safe no matter if some areas has none or less crimes..

Also I would like to add that I totally agree with RebelGirl on cell phones, it may help some way but cell phones don't always save lives....

I would love to agree with you to keep a 7 years old child home from school until the problem were fixed and let them to fine us or send us to court... but the problem will be create more because they will tell you to take a car or taxi - why can´t you do that then? I know it´s stupid and feeble remark, they tried to make toward us but I beleive they would say like this. What should you say back to them? (yes I know it´s no excuse to leave 7 years old child alone with 3 different buses to school like this).

Not many people in NYC own cars.

Taxis are very expensive (and I'm not so sure I would trust all cabbies with my young child).

Public Bicycle transportation is very common here in Germany. The children receive bicycle school from police at school until they pass their test then they can ride the public transportation since they have public bicycle transportation everywhere. In London.. BIG NOooooooo.... unsafety transportation for bicycles.

My sons ride with their bicycle since they were toddlers. (We ride our bicycles to countryside with toddlers). My oldest son love to ride the bicycles with their mates around the countryside - 5 to 10 miles and 3 miles to town during good weather. My younger son only ride his bicycle to visit his friends and ride with his mates around the village.

Teenagers bicycles are everywhere here in my area.

Yes I know and has to agree with you on this but the authories don´t care.

Why you are not sure to trust cabbies?

I thought NYC is a safe place to live? I remember the thread somewhere here said that NYC is a safety place?
