Mom Jailed Because Of Son's Rotten Teeth
Woman Thought Teeth Would Just Fall Out

POSTED: 7:16 am CDT September 14, 2006

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania mother is behind bars because, police said, her son's lack of dental care was her fault.

Survey: Poor Dental Care: Abuse? (click and see the poll)

According to a local dentist, the 5-year-old boy has just eight teeth left and will need to be on a special soft food diet. The dentist said the child's tooth decay was so severe, it was criminal, and police agreed.

Dr. Nicholas Prusack said the nerves are exposed in several places.

"This is the X-ray showing the rotted teeth of the 5 year-old victim, and 12 of them so infected they had to be pulled," Prusack said.

Investigators said the damage was the result of the boy having never seen a dentist.

Now, his mother, 43-year-old Erneida Resto of Bethlehem, Pa., is charged with endangering her son's welfare.

Northampton County, Pa., children and youth services began investigating Resto in February when she took her son to a dental office in Salisbury Towsnhip, Pa.

That is where Prusack performed the surgery, saying the boy was in so much pain he could not eat.

"It is probably one of the worst cases," Prusack said.

Prusack was so concerned that he notified authorities, who said the boy had been complaining of headaches and pain in his mouth since the summer of 2005.

According to court documents, his mother said she knew her son was hurting, but did not take him to a dentist because she figured his baby teeth would fall out and the problem would fix itself.

Prusack said if he hadn't removed the boy's teeth he would likely have ended up in the hospital within six months.

He said the boy is now left with only six teeth on the bottom and two teeth on top and has a long road ahead.

"He's not going to have all of his permanent teeth, and for the next 10 years chewing food will be a problem for him," Prusack said.

Restohas been sent to Northampton County Prison under $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 22.

The boy is now in foster care, officials said.

Remind: No bashing and Insult...

I do not consider it as child abuse but parental neglect.

I was like :eek3: . Is it necassary to jail a mother because she made her mistake like every parents (including us) how to deal with their child.... Yes she made mistake for thought it's normal since her son has baby teeth and have them fall out would solve the problem. (I can't judge her for that because I didn't know her background enough)... Why she said this - is it because her son is not her first child or what? This situation remind me of my oldest son Danny. He cried for pain when he was 3 years old... I took him to dental for the check... He insured me that it's normal for the children to have pain with their baby teeth until it fall out... It could be that she know from experience from her kids before she had her son...? I would be surprised if it says that her son is her first child.

It look like that a mother has no idea what healthy nutrition and good hygiene? CPS or dental doctor should suggest her to go health class and also give her tips how to take care of her son instead of treat her as criminal. Punish her doesn't solve anything when she has no idea what right or wrong.

What a mother did belong is parental neglect, not abuse...

I strongly beleive that education is the mainly key to teach parents instead of put them to jail.

I can see someone vote "others"... It got me curious why someone disagree with poll "yes" or "no"...

*sigh* wow...
I don't know... I vote other..

Reason Mother who cannot afford expense denist cost... who receives SSDI or SSI... might be not coverage cost 100% cuz of SSDI or SSI always giving 20% can pay denist cost.. I noticed when Denist recived from SSDI or SSI card and giving cheap repair then that is it!
Sort of I've seen Welfare people who barely attend Denist in Canada becz of income limit cost.. Densit giving cheap repair and short sweet fast fix likely filling, check up and brushing then inspection cheking teeths... That is it..

Filling is SILVER (cheap one)

Today expensive filling white one... TOTAL COOL. I like those..
*ahem* I have fewer silver filling on my teeth.. ugh! Long time ago Denist did those!

2nd oponion: If Mother have plenty money coming from her work and what wrong w/her benefits coverage denist???
Meaning, she is neglect her son!

Ohhh it's you, GA...

Yes, you have a good point about health insurance... I heard that not all Americans insured health insurance. I can understand that the reason why they can't afford to insure the health insurance... which is sad.

Here in Germany - Public Health insurance is an obligation for everyone.... but it's up to us to choose which companies, we want to choose but it is MUST.

Yes, we (poor or rich people) receive the equal treatment... I receive white filling, no more silver filling. If rich people want something extra then they have to insure private heath insurance. (example, one room for a person, no share room with other person in hospital or want professor to operate him, not experts, etc.)

Yes I'm agree that what a mother did is parental neglect. I really don't know her background... I need to hear her side first then I say something.

well it depend here. lil girl has real bad teeth, all brown. Her mother always give her mountain dew and junkies foods. lil girl couldn't able to eat her favorite candies, gums, or some kinds meats. It was very sad. I think her fault, cuz she seem don't care. So, if she is same as her boat. I can't say who or names to bring up. I would say YES!!!!

Even if poor, as long they know what they r doing, brush their teeth everyday 2 to 3 times a day. Which is show good take care.

I was supposed to vote yes, but I accidently hit no. My mistake. Even through I know dental is not cheap, there are so many places that won't accept payment plan, that you got to pay it in full when you're there or provide a insurance carrier to cover the dental fees. It did not say if she had dental coverage for her son or not. Since her son complain of headache and pain in his mouth since the summer of 2005, and did nothing to help her own son, Yes, that is neglecting her own son's welfare. Second of all he is just five years old, with so much rotten teeth, How could a five years old get that much? Has he been brushing his teeth? What has she been feeding him? It seems like to me that the five years old boy was not properly taken care of.

I remember when my son, Markus had a tooth ache, and was in so much pains, I took him in right away, I knew the cost of dental was not going to be cheap, It's gotta be expensive, What's more important? Having your own son being in so much pains, or get it taken care of? I choose to get it taken care of. What happened was his adult tooth was coming out while the baby tooth was still there, it cause infection. So they just removed the baby tooth and let adult tooth grow out properly.

i vote no cuz of mother may cant afford to pay for this ... cant blame on her

It's neglect, which is punishable by a jail sentence in this country.

However, this is dicey. I believe many factors could have gone into that, and we need to find out why she neglected the dental care before we pass judgment on her. If she was callous and just neglected her child out of indifference, than she deserves to go to jail, but if she couldn't afford dental care then, that needs to be taken into account.

I agree that not getting treatment for the child once infection started IS tantamount to neglect, and should be punished. No child should suffer like that.

This is a tough on for me to give a clear opinion on. I'm sitting on the fence on this one.

Yeah... i remembered one of my classmates entrolled in deaf school with her brother... her teeth were covered with black decaying ..... there were nothing to help her.. until she lost all baby teeth and her permanent teeth all white.. in excellent conditions..

This is tough, but yeah I do think it's child abuse, let me tell you why,

First, his mother knew her son was hurting, but did not take him to a dentist as soon as possible and her son had several headaches and was in pain since the summer of 2005...It took her one year to take him in???...Not good

Second, his mother didn't at least try to call the dentist even if she had money problems or no insurance, she could have done her part by checking to see if they will allow her to bring him in...They can always work out a payment plan or something, but ignoring the problem makes it worse.

Third, The boy only has six teeth on the bottom and two teeth on top left, not good at all and he also not going to have all of his permanent teeth and he may have a diffcult time chewing on his fave foods that he would like to eat...

In my opinion, when a parent causes a child who is less than 18 years of age to suffer and is in physical pain that is child abuse and neglect to me...The mother did was wrong to wait a year to bring her 5 years old in and allowing her son to suffer a greal deal of pain which can cause her son to suffer emotionally and physically...There are several types of physical child abuse and not reporting a medical illness in a child is one of them when she fail to take her 5 years old to the dentist sooner ...

So I vote " yes " it is an abuse!

I don't care if the mother could not afford to take him to the dentist. I'm surprised she hasn't heard of MEDICAID!

If she could afford to take him to the dentist but did not WANT to, then...that's even worse.

My own father and his wife always refused to take me to doc when I was sick...so I always was very sick and they made me go to school even when I couldn't breathe worth shit. After I went into foster care, I finally got medical care and rarely get bronchitis now. Before foster care, I had bronchitis very often, never treated, and it was always bad. And my parents had good insurance and plenty of money!

So...yes. it's CHILD ABUSE!

Oh I see.... I am sorry... some parents should not have children if they cannot take care of them properly...
I remembered my son was 5 yrs old.. he had loose tooth.. he wont let me pulling it out.. So i took him to the dentist ... It cost me 50 bucks.. at least he was comfortable with this dentist pulling his loose tooth.. It was worth...

Well Said,,, He is in sooo pain and couldnt eat... so why dont his mother find a way to get Help!!!

I will become panic and begs for HELP

Peace
Phillips

I'm rethinking this. On second thought, the child's gums were infected. That is what probably tipped the scale, and caused the woman to be charged with abuse. Knowing what I know about infections, the infection could have travelled to the child's brain or entered the child's bloodstream, and kill him. Then, this woman would be staring down a murder charge. So, yeah...

Therefore, I'm getting off the fence and saying this was child neglect, and she should be charged as such, prosecuted, and the child's needs need to be taken care of NOW.

There are also other options for low income people and kids...

Some dental offices will actually pull your tooth for less...my first wisdom tooth that I needed pulled, I was in between insurances as I had taken on a new job and was waiting for their insurance to kick in but needed my wisdom taken out NOW as I was in so much pain...they pulled it out for only $40. Not bad! Also, some places will work on a sliding scale.

Also....dental schools on some university campuses have student dentists that will treat your teeth for much less since they are students...it is better than nothing...

So...yeah.

But the bottom line is..if you can't afford to take your kid to dentist but make too much money for Medicaid...well...sometimes, Medicaid will not cover YOU but will usually cover YOUR kid because kids are more important...at least that's what I understand.

In some states Medicaid will NOT cover dental care for adults, but WILL cover children up to the age of 21 for dental care. Texas is one of those states. In all states, children will be covered for dental care.

I voted Yes.

Why?

Because the mother let her son suffer in pain and that is an abuse

she neglected her son.. big time.. she should have taken her son to dentist .. but if the mother cant afford insurance.. she could have gotten medicaid for her kid? or take her son to dental clinic who will only take 10 dollars. she could have taken her son there?

I did have medicaid on my son TJ and i took him to dentist to have them checked out and make sure they are fine. He doesnt have cavity and it look good! :)

My mom took me to dentist when i was young.. many times.. for cleaning and everything.. i still have brown on my bottom teeth.. it was not my moms fault.. i got real sick with high fever and the result was brown on my teeth .. strange, i know but thats what dentist said.. so it was not my moms fault.. btu anyway on top of my teeth are covered with white filling so can cover the ugly brown up.. but on bottom 2 are stillt here.. cant see it cuz when i smile it doesnt show ?? so not bother me.. its just cuz of the results of being sick when i was young with high fever..
