AMERICA'S CBS News has broadcast the first pictures of Suri Cruise, daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

The lack of photographs of the girl, born four months ago, had prompted some speculation that she may never have been born.

"Yesiree, she does exist," said CBS host Katie Couric.

The photos show her playing with her parents. She has a head of thick, dark hair.

Vanity Fair magazine's new edition, out today in the US, carries world-exclusive pictures of Suri and her parents.

In less than two hours after the news aired on CBS, blogs like Celebrity Baby Blog and I'm Not Obsessed had published the photos.

The New York Post reported last month that Vanity Fair magazine had landed the first photos of Suri Cruise, the baby born to actor Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes on April 18.

She has never been seen by the public, until today, although family friend Penelope Cruz said she was "beautiful".

The Post said the pictures were taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.

Few recent celebrity subjects have produced as much table-thumping tabloid copy as questions about the existence and well-being of baby Suri.

Suri was born after months of nonstop publicity generated by Cruise and his new lady love including an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show by the actor in which he declared his love for Holmes by jumping over a couch.

Cruise proposed to Holmes at the Eiffel Tower last year and announced the engagement at a press conference.

Before the baby was born, the press was filled with stories about the Scientology method of silent birth. Both Cruise and Holmes are adherents of Scientology.

But after the baby was born, Tom and Katie, or TomKat as they are referred to, disappeared from public view, leading to a tabloid outcry as to why the child was not being seen.

Spanish actress Penelope Cruz said she was among the select few who had met Suri.

Cruz, who was in London recently to attend the British premiere of her new film Volver, said she had met Cruise, his partner Katie Holmes and their daughter.

Cruz, 32, who dated Cruise from 2001 to 2004, declined to offer details of the meeting, but praised Suri as a special baby.

"She's really beautiful. She's one of the most beautiful babies I've ever seen," Cruz said.

Matrix actress Jada Pinkett Smith who is a member of the Church of Scientology like Tom - recently revealed she has visited "gorgeous" Suri twice and says she takes after her Hollywood star dad.

Kings of Queens actress Leah Remini another Scientologist also said she had seen the "beautiful" tot and described Tom and his fiancee Katie as "great parents".

Vanity Fair Exclusive: Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise Talk About Baby Suri; 22-Page Family Portfolio by Annie Leibovitz

NEW YORK, N.Y.—In a private conversation with Vanity Fair features editor Jane Sarkin, Katie Holmes tells her that "it's been heartbreaking" to see what's being said in the press about her family and her baby. "Some of the crap that's out there—the stuff that's said about my parents and my siblings [tabloid accounts implied that Katie's family did not hit it off with Tom]—it's really frustrating the amount of shit that's out there. And the stuff they say about Suri?! You shouldn't say that about us, and you can't say that about my child."

Holmes explains that the gossip "eats away at me because it's just not O.K.," but that she keeps up on it because "this is my future. This is my family, and I care so much about them. To see how someone as caring and good as Tom is—to see how things can just get so twisted and turned around. I mean, where does it come from?"

Sarkin spent five days with the Cruise-Holmes extended family at Cruise's Telluride, Colorado, compound, sharing meals, taking hikes, and hanging out. Bella and Connor, whom Cruise and Nicole Kidman adopted during their marriage, were there, as well as Holmes's mother and father, Cruise's mother and sister, and other family members.

Sarkin reports that Cruise and Holmes coo over the baby like any new parents. "She has Kate's lips and eyes," Tom says of the baby. "I think she looks like Kate." Holmes counters, "I think she has Tom's eyes. I think she looks like Tom."

"I was overjoyed in being pregnant," Holmes tells Sarkin, "and then had to withstand ridicule about my pregnancy when it was the most normal, non-controversial thing imaginable." Of speculation in the press, Holmes says, "All those things were invented."

Holmes explains their purchase of an in-house sonogram machine to Sarkin, saying that they were followed by paparazzi and as a result her doctor had to make house calls. "The sonogram was for his use!" she says.

Leading up to the frenzy over the pictures, "we were just living our lives, being a family," Cruise says. "Actually, we were taking our own photos and always planned to release those at the right time." But "then all the craziness began," Holmes says. "This 'Where is Suri?' controversy. Tom and I looked at each other and said, 'What's going on?' We weren't trying to hide anything."

"It seemed only natural to have Annie take the first public photographs of Suri," says Cruise of their decision to allow Leibovitz to photograph the baby. "Annie is the only professional photographer who ever shot Bella and Connor as children."

"The moment the doctor handed me Suri," Holmes tells Sarkin, "I was just ready. The feeling is indescribable. All I can say is the moment I looked in her eyes I felt like ... Mom." Holmes continues: "She's a glorious girl. She's the miracle of our life."

The October issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on September 6, and nationally by September 12.

am i the only one who see's asian in this child

this is a cute baby, but, since when is either tom or katie of asian nationality? There is no way that they can say this baby is not asian either. I guess the public can now see why they hid this child from the world for so long. I don't know about you but most people can't wait to show off their kid.
