Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

Kik I am not saying that your only form of communication is pointing.... it is the only communication most of them will understand for the most part.
I really think some of them are scared to try to communicate simply because they don't understand how.

I don't believe deaf/hoh are afraid to communicate (or are scared to). I just don't think people take the time to meet them halfway (pen/paper, ASL, or whatever else). Deaf/hoh are blunt :giggle: sure but I don't think they're afraid to. Many go their entire lives as the only deaf/hoh person in an entire hearing family (not entirely but most) and learn to communicate in their own way to hearing people.

Visual cues can help but I'd get confused (as a hearing person) if someone just pointed something. What about their soft drink? Their tots or fries?

As someone who is HOH, I'd want take the time to slow down and be reasonable without just pointing...no matter what my communicate method is.

However, this is just my personal opinion so that doesn't reflect those who may have a better (and smarter) opinion on it than myself.

I was referring to the hearies being afraid to try to communicate with a Deaf or HOH not HOH or Deaf being afraid to communicate with a hearing.

KIK I know the feeling of being the only one that is HOH in a family. (well other than my son who has had hearing loss since grade school.) You do try to find was to communicate. I have often had people get annoyed when I ask them to face me and repeat what they said. I have even had them face me start moving their hands as if they were signing and talk with the accent. Or my personal favorite is when they turn to face me and SCREAM it in my face... yup that helped!!!

Its a Lil hard to open up to the deaf community as a hearing person after seeing this thread. I don't think it's very nice to make fun of people and you are doing just that. People will always be ignorant hearing or not but to lump us all together as stupid hearing people? I'm a Lil upset and now I'm wondering why my asl teacher said deaf people are a lot more open than hearing people and friendlier. Seems like be to me now. Everyone is the same just born a bit different. Just like u don't wanna be judged for being deaf I don't wanna be judged for.being a hearing person. I originally joined the forum to hopefully find a deaf person near me to practice with but NEVER MIND

Just throwing it out there..... This thread isn't "Annoying ignorant hearing people stories because every hearing person is annoying and ignorant." This thread is annoying ignorant hearing people stories, meaning people we've encountered for the day. By no means is it stating every hearing person is annoying and ignorant. Also, there are quite a few hearing people that are well known on the forum. Based on your atrocious spelling, grammar and sentence structure..... I'll just assume this was a lack of literacy on your end.....Don't worry, I forgive you. :D

My mother works for the sheriffs office here in Tampa. She told me today she pulled over someone who said they were deaf. She said oh okay, my daughter is deaf and asked them if they signed to communicate. Well, turns out they just said that to get out of having to talk to the police. APPARENTLY this is common! People will pretend to be deaf so the police "don't want to bother getting a terp involved" and let them go! Unbelievable!

I would have to agree and say that not ALL hearing people are iggnorant to the deaf. It is much more for lack of knowlegde than it is ignorance. A lot of hearing people do not understand the deaf culture. I am hearing and I know from exprience that I get labeled as ignorant and rude but I have also been heavily enriched in the deaf culture for the past four years, so I know a thing or two. Labeling all hearing people as ignorant, is ignorant in itself. just saying.

 But of course this is not your thread to talk in.

Nowhere does it say, "hearing people come in and refute our feelings and memories."

I know I repeatedly mentioned that I still got annoyed by hearing people who KNEW that I am Deaf. They tend to raise their voice SO freaking LOUD. I kept telling them, that I am NOT a DAMN late Deafened, I was DAMN born Deaf and an ASL user.

they feel hurt.

I understand. But it still makes me angrier every time another one of them does it.

I had enough of being picked on in everyday life, and I find it soothing to have a place where many people had the same experience.

:hmm: what difference does that make? I'm DAMN late deafened and yelling isn't going to help me understand anymore than it would you.

yea you have a good point. I dont have any experience with being late deafened. I was born Deaf.
:D So

I know. It does make my eyes roll when they say that to me. I dont remember what I told them because it happens all the time. But in your post, I was being saracastic. But I know and agree with you. it does make me feel like, " excuse me you hearing people, stop it!"

I CAN see where they're coming from. I mean it does seem rather rude......annoying ignorant hearie people......just sounds, hostile? Prejudicial?

But I myself have posted stories in here, but I think of it as more just annoying ignorant people.......it doesn't really have anything to do with being hearing, I'm pretty sure there are annoying ignorant deaf people, and whatever else kind if people. Some people are just assholes.

The thing that really bugs me the most if someone responds to me like I'm stupid because I didn't understand something they said. It's hurtful and demeaning, but I can see why it happens. Hearies don't run into deaf people very often, bit they run into stupid ones All. The. Time. There are way more honest to god boneheads out there than there are deaf people. So their first thought to me going "what?" Isn't...."oh she's deaf she didn't hear it all" it's "omg another moron, how many stupid people can I run into in one day". After I inform them I'm deaf they feel intensely embarrassed. Usually, not always, because again, just like some people are mental midgets some are asshats.

:D So

Well late deafened can be a tricky spot. I'm profoundly deaf, but with my aids I consider myself HoH, I do still rely on speech, even if my speech recognition is only like 30 or 40%, I forget, I manage between that and lip reading but yelling makes it impossible, makes everything even more distorted. Slower and careful enunciation are better :D just saying

The town I live in now has 60,000 people. I was very involved with my three children, coaching soccer, softball, karate and being team mom for baseball. Plus I worked almost twenty years in the pharmacy. In that whole time, I ran into just a handful of deaf customers at work. Even now when we go out to our very busy mall, restaurants etc. I never see anyone signing. I know if I was healthy I would try to become more involved with deaf meetings etc.

Just wanted to say, that almost everything I learned, I learned from all of you on this site. I didn 't know what CODA, TTY, CC , CI, HA etc. meant until some of you took the time to explain it to me. My deafness happened overnight, I didn't have any time to prepare. I think it is great that I can come to this site for information and support and even vent about hearing people.

It is a compliment when a hearing person doesn't think of you as a deaf person. They forget sometimes. I've had people forget that I am deaf. I like that because then I am treated equally.

On the other hand, I have some people in my life who think of me as Deaf first and really treat me like one. That I don't like too much.

I think that would depend how the person treat deaf people. I was having my car inspected and a guy overheard me talking and he wanted to ask me about something about Finlay , he could tell I was HOH from my speech and he made sure to stand in front of me before talking , the guy said he knew someone HOH and wanted to where I got my dog. I thought it was very nice that guy respected the fact that I am HOH and made sure I could see his face while he talked to him.
