WiFi disconnects every night?

I'd be interested to know what the router actually does when this is happening.

Does it switch off? If you log into it to check, has the 'time connected' figure appear to have reset (as in, it has just reconnected to the internet as opposed to having been connected for many hours)?

The reason I ask is, seven years ago when I moved into my house, I signed up for Sky Broadband (UK) and they supplied a router. The router itself was faulty and would randomly disconnect and sometimes struggle to reconnect. It was a physical problem, and when I finally managed to convince their tech support of this and received a replacement router my service then worked flawlessly for the six years I lived there.
I'll have to wait and see what happens the next time.

Our service provides the modem but not the router. I buy the routers myself.

You should buy the modem too. The service provider makes hundreds of dollars off the rental price which can be better used by you.

so do mine,it works all day upstairs then about 9/10 it give up but ok if put it near modem

It must depend on the company. Our's doesn't charge us rental for our modem, and they replace it for free any time we ask.

For the past week, my wifi has been fine.

Today, about 1 p.m., my wifi disappeared again. I had to do the unplug, wait, re-plug routine to get it back. It's OK now.

:dunno:

That is amazing. A major amount of revenue for my service provider comes from equipment rental. While I hate it and don't subscribe to it, it is a smart business move.

They must be including the price in the bill. At the very least, they have to charge for the operational cost.

I'll look into that.

Well, I was wrong. We just got this email from Time Warner today:

"Important information about your Internet service

We want to inform you of upcoming changes to your Internet service price beginning with your next bill. The Internet Modem Lease will be $5.99.

When leasing a modem from Time Warner Cable you have access to 24/7 customer support and required equipment upgrades or replacements."

So, it looks like I'll be shopping for a modem. Any suggestions?

I use a Docsis 3.0 cable modem with wireless N capability, Motorola SURFBoard. If your provider is not limiting bandwidth, you might notice a huge speed jump on the download side.

How you know it was modem problem?

Motorola SURFboard Cable Modem SB5101 - Best Buy

This is better recommend and I own one and no problem so far. It's pretty quick enough for netflix and PC gaming online at the same time.

Thanks guys. The Motorola Surfboard looks very promising. I read the reviews, and I'm impressed.

I have to finish my final project for my summer course this week. Then I will make the modem switch.
