Having grown up in the suburbs, I have never been without a car. I bought my first one a few months before I got my license at 16.5 years old. Even if you don't intend to get a car, driving is an important skill in case you ever have to do it some day.
Personally, I think (once you get over any initial fear) you'll love it. It gives you a alot of freedom and power.
Today, you can use a zip car if you don't have your own. In NY as here in Boston, parking a car can be very costly.

sorry to laugh and I'm glad your foot didn't get run over, but that happens ALL THE TIME here!! Well, maybe mostly people just claiming to have had their foot run over to sue the city. It's never very dark here at night, and I've seen cars with no headlights on at night because I suppose the driver doesnt realize he didn't put them on because of the street lights everywhere.
The bus driver did suffered a broken nose!
