Questions raised after SEAL's identity revealed - CNN.com
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The author of the yet-to-be-published book "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden" wrote it under the pseudonym Mark Owen.

The book's publisher said the special operations forces team member did not want to reveal his name to protect himself and his family.

But only a day after the New York Times first reported the book was coming out, Fox News reported the author's real name on its website and posted photos of him in combat gear.

On Thursday, the New York Times said the book's publisher, Dutton, put out a statement after Owen's name was revealed.

"Mark Owen, like every SEAL he has served with, has put his life on the line time and again for his country for more than a decade. Sharing the true story of his personal experience in "No Easy Day" is a courageous act in the face of obvious risks to his personal security. That personal security is the sole reason the book is being published under a pseudonym. We respectfully request that all news organizations and all Americans consider these facts when deciding whether to pursue or publicize his real identity," the statement said.

This thread is about Fox News releasing Mark Owen's real name to public and nothing else. Focos Focus Focus. Feel free to create a new thread for another angle.

Where I stand.... Fox News' releasing of this hero's real name to public is considered traitorous and unpatriotic.

It may be a good thing they did. I'm sure there are many that would like to thank him. One downside is the others that made the mission possible do not receive credit.

These heroes do not want attention nor credits. That's why the author used pseudonym.

Wonder what is the FoxNews angle on this is? Are they reporting the whole story, and that MM refused? Will this increase their fanclub membership? Sponsors lining up?

IMO
FOX News did what any media organization needs to do and their actions are patriotic toward keeping the American informed.

The NYTimes has published the reason for him wanting to use a pseudonym but not detailing his safety from whom. It is probably from:
1) the extremist of bin Laden
2) possible legal action by DOD through DOJ for unauthorized use of military secret
3) retaliatory action by SEALs for #2

I don't agree.

Revealing the SEAL author's name served no purpose that was in the good for the nation.

they can thank him by buying his book as the fund would go to families of the fallen SEALs. I will be buying his book too.

IMO, FoxNews exploited this man's privacy to further their bottom line. Dollars talk loudly enough to distract people from listening to common sense.

Of course, the owner is a dual citizen of USA and Australia. Not much for him to fear; he can always slide Down Under if things get a bit uncomfortable here in USA.

How long do you think it would take the other SEALs to take rollcall and figure out who it is?

How do you think FOX News got the name?

This guy has done a terrible disservice and FOX has the responsiblity of keeping the public informed. Even A.P. has done its responsibility. I would not hold my breath waiting for the levees to do so. You and I can disagree but how about letting all Americans have the chance to take sides, yours or mine. And how are all Americans suppose to do so if most of MM bury this?

I think you need to get your facts straight before you speak. You're getting just about everything wrong.

Yup, I agree with you about releasing hero's real name to public, without his consent is traitorous and unpatriotic, and I can't believe that few members didn't understand about concept of your thread.

I got an email from Military.com and they gave out the SEAL author's real name
too. I was surprise to see this from a Military web site.

At least I got one fact right....you are a bully.

Just because a publisher says the material is not classified does not mean the DOD agrees. That has to come straight from the horse's mouth......and that is a fact.

Nevermind

whatdidyousay! - I'm sorry about harsh post.

Well, the cat's already out of the bag.

BTW, military.com is NOT a military site. Note the .com. Official military sites end in .mil, and government sites end in .gov.

I wonder, what's the purpose/agenda of FOX to release the name? I bet you, it's more than just to boost their ratings. Yes, the media has the right to keep the public informed but what they're doing is no different than relaying and withholding the information to the public to paint a story or picture. You and I both know that they divulge plenty of half-truths. Even if FOX had not released the name, one of the mainstream media probably would have got wind of it and leak it.

As for the author of the book - I can't say that it was his fault. He knew there were risks involved when the book was about to go public. He had to know that his name probably would have came out eventually. If not for FOX, it could have went out some other way.

I don't agree with FOX's decision to release the author's name.

I also strongly believe that the author should have submitted his book thru DoD channels to get it cleared before publishing. I'm sure he knew the rules.
