Talking Deafies... how often do you talk??

I was wondering, those who can talk, and are deaf/Deaf,
how often do you use your verbal skills?
Daily? weekly? monthly?

Always... Rarely do I sign, as I'm not around manual Deaf very much. However, I do use interpreters for the store meetings.
 
not much to talk more likely monthly that's why I have signing plm much slower and some of signs new to me that I have never seen before.
 
So far no reason to stop talking every day- even though I am bilateral DEAF. aside: I do have a Cochlear Implant.

in the other thread "Who's talking Deafie"?

The reason I am asking, I am curious how often is this skill used after all
since so many is opposed to speech therapy- so I hope you understand my curiosity,
that what happens once you do learn to talk - if you guys yourself find it useful or not?

I grew up "oral hearing impaired." I didn't think of myself as deaf, and when I once asked a HI teacher if I was deaf, I was told that I was not. So I just did what was expected of me. Oral only, no sign language taught in my program, and speech training every day in grade school, with the mirror.

So given that context, I didn't exactly have a choice but to use verbal skills every day. I didn't have a problem with the use of verbal skills. I could talk to people one-on-one in quiet places. I got by. And I still use it every day, because it's my number-one communication tool at this point. One uses what one has.

What wasn't fun was being left out of group activities at school, in the family, among groups of friends, etc.
 
Talking when Deaf

I used to talk everyday then just last January 2012 decided I would stop talking and make everyone write as well as read what I write on pad. I feel much better cuz don't have to struggle and repeat so often. Plus its fun to see that people don't know how to write anymore or feel clumsy writing. More power to writing!
 
Yes, indeed....I talk every day from the time I wake up until I go to bed. And will never stop talking. Luckily, my boys know ASL and at times have to use it for certain words/phrases....Those who are late-deafened do have somewhat of an advantage, tho'.....And I was encouraged by a very special English teacher to never stop talking, or I would "forget how."....And I'm glad that I heeded those words of wisdom.

And whenever I do encounter hearies that know some ASL, it brings a smile to my face and a "thank you" to them. It makes communication between us more easy and less stressful.
 
i know i loud and only mild deaf accent i told...i have days when i turn off but mostly i talk everyday i lip read but others far better than me .i sign at deaf club but since move from london there no deaf club near me there is h of h but they no sign..really miss deaf club....there is a choir here that signers but i find it patronizing signing christmas carols when i rather go into deaf club have good laugh drink games and adult chat.so unless i no make effort to talk life be lonely

Caz- have you thought going online,
and try to get some pple to get together on the same day, same time someplace,
or even better.
open your own 'deaf' club?

Your English teacher was clueless... You probably multitask too. talk on phone and type at same time... I do believe there is a term for never shutting up... Verbal Diarrhea:giggle::giggle: You admitted it, I just gave it a name
 
I was never in "speech therapy" since becoming bilateral DEAF-December 20, 2006, It was never suggested by St Michaels/Toronto ENT Clinic that I should.
 
I talk everyday, but I am also beginning to sign more.
 
i just wish i could sign more with other people...what really peeves me they have sign club in norwich and most of the people are hearing and bsl at high level.me who deaf have not done the same exams was no need to as i get through life average in everything is barred to their sign club,it would be nice if i could go.they are of a level to terp on tv or in court .i can have fluent conversation even tho i not univercity level....
 
I rarely talk... Refused to use my voice for a long time, maybe 7 or 8 years. Then I started taking up speech therapy again recently. I wanted to be better able to communicate with my hearing friends as well as increase my odds for a job. But now that I graduated, I am no longer surrounded by hearing people other than my family - who happens to sign quite well. So I haven't had any excuse to use my voice lately. If anyone is wondering why I stopped speech therapy again, well it's because I graduated and am in the process of job hunting. There are no job opportunities in my area, so I will have to relocate for 100% sure. I am kind of in limbo right now. When I DO find a job and relocate, then I will look for services in that area since I will be staying there for a while.
 
I mostly on communication usual's ASL :) I do best skills love ASL lots of sign language also, I oral lip reading i can speaking to anyone, :) I do mostly talking important to ASL
