Do you want to be charged for using your debit card?

 Yikes!

It might be time to move across country or go into a witness protection program.

This is totally horrible to say, but personally, I will be almost glad when she is dead and gone. Hubby has agreed. We would never push it and do anything to make it happen sooner.

I have an account with the SC Federal Credit Union. So far, I have no charges on any of my accounts (checking and savings) or transactions. I hope they keep it that way.

I've never had any overdraft charges because I don't bounce any checks or debits.

I did have to dispute a couple of false charges to my account one time from some overseas internet company that was a total mystery to me. It took a few days, and I had to get a new card issued but I got all my money back.

Didn't you say that she is living with you and your family?

I believe they are living with her MIL. However that still doesn't mean it's okay for her MIL to check into their accounts and etc.

My mother is living with us, and we all are living with MIL. It's MIL that we wish was gone. My mother has her issues, but she's not quite as bad as MIL.

So, in the house, owned by MIL, we have MIL (75), mother (72) hubby, me, and our 2 teenagers (16 & 17) and 2 cats.

 Now that's a full house! I don't know how you haven't gone crazy so far!

NO! I dont want to be charged for it. I am liking TheWriteAlex's idea...never thought of it that way.

Found out that our bank and MIL's bank is starting this today. I have taken hubby's debit card away. I will use mine for ID only when cashing a check from MIL at her bank and MIL never got a debit card. My mother has also put hers away. We will now start using cash and checks only. When paying online, we will make sure that it is not the debit card number anymore but is the checking account number.

Hubby, son and father-in-law all have the same first and last name. Also, MIL still know's hubby's social security number and has been able to get info on our accounts. If we are at a different bank, then she can't get the info. FIL may have died 2 years ago, but he is still on all the accounts.

I've been dealing with things like this regarding her since we married in 1993. And yes, the banks are not doing their job properly, but she has always been able to do that. She has been doing this since we got married. That's why, I stay at a different financial institution and we have extra safeguards on our accounts for this. I have opted for no telephone inquiries at all and in office, you must show photo ID. It should be that way at every bank, but you would be surprised that not all of them do it. My accounts are flagged for that purpose.

I smell several serious violations and possibly criminal charges.

$76 BILLION in profits last year. Doesn't that bother anybody?
Bank of America did not make $76 billion in profits last year. And if they did, I would say that's a good thing because that means they're doing an awesome job of assessing risk and directing capital to the most useful places.

This fee is Congress' fault. They could easily do away with it if they were capable of admitting that they screwed something up.

How much did they make?

Here are their 2010 quarterly earnings that I can gather from media reports:

Q1- $3.2 billion
Q2- $3.1 billion
Q3- $3.1 billion
Q4- -$1.2 billion

Total: $8.4 billion

It's about an order of magnitude below $76 billion.

Okay, but that's still is alot of money!!

To take money from people that needs money most but not from people that has hgh bank balance. Makes over 10 Billion dollars a year, :hmm: Yea!!
Again, all these new fees can be traced back directly to laws passed by Congress. It's the law of unintended consequences. They're not just raising fees for the heck of it. If they were, all of their customers would just leave and go elsewhere. That doesn't happen because all the other banks have similar fees because the same laws apply to them.

As for charging more fees to people with low balances, it costs money to manage an account, especially an account without much money because banks make money by loaning to individuals and businesses. Because of the government's brilliant interventions, they would lose money maintaining low balance accounts unless they charged fees.

I don't care if it is congress fault or not! They are still taking money away from poor!!

While they are making billions of dollars a year!! They can give up on few milliion or billion a year!

AS for leaving, I am leaving by end of year and I hope alot of them do leave BoA and send message to banks loud and clear.

How about this from BoA. I went to close my son's account that I am joint on. They claim that I can only close it online or with a signed notarized letter detailing exactly why I am closing it. It currently has a zero balance. Since it was a child's account, there was no online access for it, so I can't do it online and I refuse to do a stupid letter like that to close it. Why waste the time and paper to do that. Plus, I cannot use their notary to notarize the letter, so it will cost me $15 to get another notary to notarize the letter. That's why I refuse.

I've never heard of that! Whenever I closed accounts, they closed it and was done.

You're acting like the poor have no choice in the matter, but clearly they do. Just like you're leaving, the poor can leave too and go to another bank or stop using their debit card. However, I'm not so sure you'll find a better deal as the other banks are going to have to increase their fees, too. But if you do, more power to you. Perhaps your local credit union may work out better?
