About Parents?

again - there are dozens of other deaf forums. why this one?

I have asked the same. Question has yet to be answered.

Of course I have already have made my decision, we were given 2 options 3 months ago and I choose what I thought was best. I never said I'm unwilling to change my mind. I'm not against ASL, actually, before we even found out Natalie had hearing loss we were teaching her very basic signs as an infant (more, apple, thank you) things of that nature.

I've actually called this morning a few places to see if there are any adult classes for me to learn ASL. I am willing to chance our approach if I feel in anyway our approach would hurt her in the long term. I've gotten more than a few NICE PM's about the benefits of signing for all types of hearing loss. I have an IFSP meeting with our service coordinator set up later this week and am going to ask if there are programs available to us to teach her ASL.

So, yes, I am willing to do whatever it is to help her. Just before this forum I thought the best thing to help her was audit-verb therapy. Now, I'm not quite sure.

I still don't appreciate all the rude comments like saying I'm a snake (venom), saying "with a parent like me, she'll need therapy for the rest of her life" and things like that.

I only want the best for her and if that's ASL than bring it on, if it's not (as the audiologist thinks) than we'll go full speed into whatever is. It's harder for me because I am hearign and don't understand what it is to have hearing loss and my child isn't old enought to say "Hey mom, I want to sign."

You're using a certain set of words that sets all sorts of red flags off for me. However I'll post this just in case that I, with many others, are wrong.

If you're relying so much on just the audiologist please also ask yourself this:

What does he have to gain/lose?
If he recommended ASL - what are the benefits for him?
If he recommended the oral methods - what are the benefits for him?

After asking yourself these questions it should become more clear to yourself what you should do.

Are you talking to me? If so, I wasn't thinking about you. OTHERS were assuming that hearingaidmama was an ADer (FJ, you, Bob, or whoever). I was pointing out the flaw in their reasoning, saying that many other parents have similar thinking. Relax, I was actually defending you. I don't think you'd do something like that.

Ok, well thanks for clearing that up. Since you included my name, I thought that's what you were referring to in the other thread as well. I appreciate you clarifying that for me.

I searched google and this was the one I found.

I frequent to Philly. It's only couple hours away. I'm beginning to like it to the point where I have considered living on outside of Philly. If you're for real... then my deepest apology and it's on me for you and your daughter when I'm in town but one question... Geno or Pat? which you like? :)

Seriously? You all sound like a bunch of crazy people. I was sent here by other people? Paranoid much? God forbid anyone new try to post in your group, you have to run them out.

Then I guess you fooled me with post 137. Just a few back.

God the wording and phrasing is like deja vu. There can't possiblly be that many coincidences. Not all in one place at one time.

I would like some answers to the questions posed in post 136.

Awwww, pooooor you. Are you whinnying in torment now? You have no sympathy from me.

Trying to see if I'll trip up? I've only had Geno's steaks once. When you live in Philadelphia there's no need to drive all the way to center city for a cheese steak when there are a million places to call that deliever to your home.

Ohhh...now you are sounding more like the person we have been thinking of all along.

See, the last sentence of your first paragraph is raising a red flag, too, simply by the way you have worded it.

I understand that some of the newer members don't see what I, and several others who have been around for awhile are seeing. But that is simply because they have not had the same experiences with a particular faction that the rest of us have had.

So, based on Cheetah's post that touched you to tears, are you willing to consider that the audiologist and the auditory verbal therapist are hearing and know virtually nothing about what it is to be a deaf child?

Yes, I am willing to consider. Like I stated I've already called 2 places to try to find adult ASL classes. Is that the question you would like answered.

Where did you call? What do you see as the benefits of adding ASL to the environment? You changed your mind regarding ASL very quickly. What happened to create such a drastic change in philosophy in such a short period of time.

No, I asked several questions in the first post I made addressing your points made this a.m. Those are the ones that are not being answered. Post 128. I posted the wrong number the first time.

yea I know but I ain't living in Philly. no way. Just outside the city limit is fine with me. I refuse to live in ANY city zone. There were a few towns I was interested in but I can't remember the name. However - I'm glad to see that Philly has transformed itself compared to 10 years ago.

One org runs adult basic classes at a high school about a half hour from my home and the other is community college of philadelphia.

I know of a member that recently relocated, in her words, "halfway across the country." Bet a dollar to a donut she is living in Philly.

you can simply take basic ASL classes with your daughter and grow from them.

but I thought you're more interested in auditory/oral method?
