Who is AG Bell

It comes down to a matter of numbers enrolled. If enough parents refuse a deaf school placement, the schools will close.

I believe Iowa school for the blind is closing this year for just that reason.

Are you saying if there many deaf students attend deaf schools, they won't shut down?

Ah now I get it. So, I don't have to worry about FSDB being shut down because it has over 300 deaf students, right? :). These deaf schools shutted down due not enough students. It make sense. But it still wrong because it not fair to other deaf children.

Yeppers....but most hearing parents are being told by the medical community and in some cases, the AGBell Organization that their child would have a "normal" life if mainstreamed.

That's how CI begins. Sigh, I hate when people think CI is like a magic.
I wonder why would Doctors think being disable is not normal? I have seen alot of hearing people ain't normal!

So, AG Bell has nothing to do with shuted down deaf schools? In fact, Nc deaf school is in risk of shut down...

If you are talking about now, no. Back then in 19th century, yes.

Some eugenicists called for legislation outlawing intermarriage by deaf people, but Bell rejected such a ban as impractical. Instead he proposed the following steps: “(1) Determine the causes that promote intermarriages among the deaf and dumb; and (2) remove them. The causes he sought to remove were sign language, deaf teachers, and residential schools. His solution was the creation of special day schools taught by hearing teachers who would enforce a ban on sign language.

I think I misunderstood what you mean... I thought you mean the guy AGB not the organization. Well, I suspect the organization is huge. I think we can fight back if we use the You-tube to get the message out. Use the captions because the hearing parents really don't know ASL. Be civil and polite. Make a good point on why the deaf kids needs to be with other deaf kids and ASL, etc.

but the organization does promote deaf children being mainstreamed over going to Deaf schools. In fact, the organization really hasnt shown any positive support to deaf schools from what I have seen and read.
Yes, and by mainstreamed they mean solotaire, not even a dhh program! I don't get it. Mainstreaming IS NOT innovative any more. It used to be....but it hasn't been for more then 25 years. Heck, it's pretty much killed off its own oral schools, like Clarke, CID and St. Joseph's.......Just ten years ago, those schools were pretty much full and had an active population. Now, its dead.
I do not get why they promote mainstreaming as something innovative......it's just like special ed promoting inclusion as some grand high glorious utopia when mainstreaming has been the norm for decades now!

Oh and enrollment numbers were down twenty years ago too. This is not a new thing. It's b/c parents are unaware of the Deaf School option.
Heck I found a thingy from 25ish years ago when they were thinking of closing down the Minn Deaf School. And you know, the enrollement numbers are dwindling at Clarke and CID and the other ORAL ones too!!! That's saying a lot!
But look at it this way. There are NEW Deaf schools; Blossom Montressori, RMDS, the one in Arizona, the one in Texas etc etc.......

In fact, Nc deaf school is in risk of shut down...
Actually I thought it was more like it was being consolidated. There's ENC School for the Deaf....Hopefully they can reinvent it somehow to keep it from being closed.

Bott, actually I do think it's not nessarily parents refusing a deaf school placement. It's b/c they may not even KNOW about the option of a Deaf School. The problem is that mainstream schools REALLY like the money that dhh kids bring. They would prefer to get away with providing a minimal accomondations FAPE (Free and "Appropreate" Education), and not have to pay for a dhh kid to go off to Deaf School. If it were not for the money that dhh (and other low incidence disabilty kids, like blind/low vision, and mental disabilty and CP) kids bring, they would be told to go to deaf school/blind school or mentally disabled school. That is how come Clarke/CID and the state schools for the deaf and blind were booming back in the old days.
I know about Iowa School for the Blind....I thought they were getting rid of the residental componet, and turning it into statewide services, like the way it's done in North Dakota.
Blind Ed is a bit more complicated though. The thing is....blind and low vision kids do not nessarily need seperate k-12 education any more. I know there's a bit of a debate over educational placement in blind ed. I remember one of our deaf blind members mentioning that. Again, I think its a combo of factors....the fact that parents of blind/low vision kids may not know that there are blind schools After all, again placement at blind schools has not been the norm for decades now! . Actually, did you know that blind ed is basicly on the outs? Most students at blind schools are mentally handicapped. Also, a lot of blind schools are facing really dwindling enrollments....matter of fact, I thought that the biggest blind school was Perkins...and that was only what? 200 kids.

The key is the teachers and administration could have handle the academic/education system better so that way the parents can see how good education system is then they would place kids in there. Unfortunately, over years the hearing administraion keep hiring hearing teachers with terrible signs thinking terrible signs is good enough for deaf students. Now look at lot of deaf schools being shut down. I know a few good deaf teachers tried to apply for some certain deaf schools and they wouldnt hire them as well. They end up work for a strong deaf community such as frederick, md, DC, Indiana, CA, texas and some schools. My old school that i ve been told that offer lot of special needs lately and the deaf kids transferring to the mainstreaming school. oh well

Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Saskatchewan Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf

Involved with AG Bell since 1985, the Saskatchewan Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf has focused its’ efforts on encouraging hearing impaired individuals to communicate by developing maximum use of residual hearing, speech and language skills; promoting public awareness and understanding of hearing loss in children and adults; and working for better educational opportunities. The Association gathers and disseminates information on hearing loss, including its causes and options for remedial treatment. Their conferences and workshops provide networking opportunities for families and professionals across Saskatchewan. Some of their achievements include: a K-8 summer camp; scholarships awarded to post secondary hearing impaired students; annual conferences/conventions; a newsletter published 4 times a year, and a Cochlear Implant Fund established in 1994. Each year, families gather to share a day of fun filled activities and getting to know each other a little better.

Out of curiosity, did you to oral program under SPARC in elementary, junior & senior high school in Saskatchewan?
