... whoa wait a second... the deaf can serve in the military????

oh that just ticks me off, I had dreamed of serving years ago was told I couldn't because of my hearing.

But aside from my personal irritation,..... that is freaking awesome! :D

why not "serve" in federal government? or defense contractors?

I was freshly out of high school at the time, didn't think there were a lot of options.

It just irritates me that I had got a flat out no.
 
I watched the WHOLE video, it's almost 19 minutes long. Very interesting.

According to Keith Nolan, 80% of the military jobs are non-combative, which I wasn't too surprised to learn of. So since that is the case, why cannot the deaf Americans serve their country? According to him, they have around 40 people with prosthetic body parts fighting right now in Iraq, and that there is a partially deaf soldier who built schools for the deaf there as well.

The deaf should be able to serve the country if they want to.
 
I would have loved to serve/join the military...ever since my brother, who was in the Air Force and a Sargent, brought me back a leather pocketbook from Morocco. The travel fascinated me.
There are many deafies who work for the government at NAS Jax, (Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla.) The benefits are great.
 
Be interesting to see that is for sure.

I have a deaf friend of mine in Iraq right now, serving a non combat job there.

That was what I was just discussing with my husband who is a former Marine. What was wrong with deaf people wanting to serve their country. 10 years ago, he would have said, "hell no" but after being involved with the Deaf community since then, he now is more open minded about this. He said he wouldnt put deaf people in the front lines.

Well....get ur arse in gear and get on down to boot camp!....:giggle:....jeez...you're gonna be sore, sore, sore!....and I imagine those drill sergents yelling in ur face..."get up, lady!...don't be a pu--y"!...But you will come home on leave a new person!...All your dental and medical taken care of....and who knows?...Maybe get a chance to see Spain, Italy, France....ahhh....imagine the possibilities.

One of my knees have been dislocated a few years back, and I have problems on and off with it. Would I still qualify?

I have friends in the air force and navy thats traveled to Italy, Hawaii, Japan... and hate it!

Some people don't appreciate the things they have
 
I got an email from a recruiter from ARMY a few years ago to ask me if I join ARMY. I replied back, "I am Deaf and fat." I had not heard from that male recruiter ever since. I was 34 years old.

I found it very odd.
 
I was a non-combatant sailor in the Navy for 24 years, and I was never sent overseas. My duty stations were in MD, IN, IL, FL, and SC.

There are no guarantees of assignment in the military. :)

If I were you, I would say Sure! Later when I arrive there and they found out that I am deaf.
