Scott Signs Welfare Drug Testing Bill

Over the summer, the public schools here will be serving breakfast and lunch for free/reduced price to children who qualify.

I fail to understand how depriving kids of nutrients resulting in lower cognitive ability helps anyone.

Last summer some schools provided free or reduced lunch but, they only had it on Mon-Thurs.

Some schools will still have it for this summer. I am not sure how that will work out, since Rick Scott have cut billions from Florida Schools.

Taking from the most vulnerable. Shameful.

Canada is very authority legal, group home is strict permission on prescriple.
I have follow rule to listen to legal strict to policy house!

That sucks! My state has cut education drastically too. My kid's teacher was laid off. He came home upset on the last day of school upset because his teacher was laid off. The teacher and the kids cried.

Actually, drugs like Ritalin show up on tox screens as amphetamines. If the person being tested does not have an Rx for the drug, and it is showing in their system, it would count as a dirty screen. I have known parents to take their children's ADHD meds, and also to sell those meds to others. It certainly is not unheard of.

Around here, abuse of Rx opiate type painkillers is a huge problem. These tests also check for the presence of opiates. If you have an Rx from the doctor, then no matter that it shows in your urine. However, you don't have an Rx, then you have just been caught with a dirty urine.

These tactics, however, do not get around the person who has an Rx, but is taking several times the recommended dosage, and supplementing their prescription with meds bought in the street. This type of addict is much more prevalent than the down and out, living under the bridge and drawing assistance addict that people seem to think of.

Straight up! You said this better than I could. I see LOTS of issues with this law, and, I hope it's challenged in the courts and struck down!

how can people applying for welfare AFFORD to pay for drug testing?!?! Shouldn't the government be the one to pick up the tab?
If they're clean, they'll be reimbursed.

If they're not, then they won't. Then they'll have to pay for their street drugs some way other than with taxpayer money.

Hey Reba I already taxpayer I have fund on support to special my medicaiton I am lucky free canada supplementation! I am serious!

Is there any guarantee that drug abusing parents who do receive welfare benefits will spend them on nutritious food for their children? Maybe it would be better for the kids if they got their benefits in the form of actual meals at school and summer programs then having to compete with mom and dad's need to buy street drugs with their need for food.

That sure sounds great, except I see this:
Man is down on his luck. Goes to Welfare office. Fills out lengthy application. Interviews. Provides several documents that detail his financial situation. He gains initial approval, pending results of a drug screening. Now comes the kicker; "Sir, we would need $60 today to continue the process. You will need to report to XYZ Clinic to provide a urine sample. If your test is clean, which would be known in approximately 7-10 days, you would be reimbursed for this fee. However, it may take 4-6 weeks for that check to arrive. At that time, you would also begin receiving benefits." So we have this man, required to pay up front to receive benefits. And this would be a government program, so you know they are not going to expediate anything, nor are they going to have a skeleton crew in the newly created Welfare Drug Testing Dept. It would most likely include a whole bunch of bureaucratic red tape at every juncture, a huge procedure manual, intensive training for all kinds of issues related to dealing with the public, a legal team to defend all the lawsuits. Certainly it will reduce the impact of drug abusers that are on the rolls. Sadly, the man I described will be the one that pays, not the tax payer that has things going their way.

I was discussing this with someone. They said for welfare to ask for a urine sample is a violation of their privacy rights.

Same person told me that people will just use other peoples urine to pass the test.

Like I said, re-victimizing the victim.
