Locals At Odds Over Naming Gas Station After President

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- When the owners of a South Carolina gas station wondered if they could find a great new business name, they probably thought, "Yes, we can."

Now, the Obama gas station is creating quite a buzz in the city of Columbia, S.C., and drivers are lining up to fill up.

The owners said they got the idea from a friend who created another Obama gas station in Michigan. They said the blue awning and familiar campaign logo are a testament to their love of the president.

"It's our president. We like him," said co-owner Sam Alhanik. "I see more people coming in -- excited with the name."

The novel pit stop is siphoning business from local gas stations and onlookers are constantly taking pictures of the signs -- one of which features a towering image of President Barack Obama.

"I think it's a good idea. I mean, I like to see the fact that they do, you know, support Obama," said customer Larry Nelson.

Some locals, however, aren't too pleased with the decor.

"A lot of people think that it's morally and ethically wrong to have the president beside beer, wine and cigarettes. You know, that's portraying an image to society and also to the children here," said nearby salon owner Chiquita Burton.

The owners said Obama has absolutely nothing to do with the gas station, but the name will remain the same.

I don't think President Obama has given his blessing to this.

It's about 100 miles north of where I live.

Perhaps I should plot a route that way to aim for Iron Butt SaddleSore (1000 miles in under 24 hours) or BunBurner (1500 miles in under 36 hours). I'd kill for a bucket of shrimps!

After that many miles you might not feel like eating.

Columbia is in the middle of our state. It's the capital city and boring. Better seafood restaurants are along the coast.

Maybe Obama's Gas Station will start a chain closer to your home. :D

If he's still in business next time I go to Columbia, I'll get a picture for you.

I don't think it's allowed either. We'll see how long it lasts.

Yeah, for some reason I was thinking that it was illegal to use the name and image of (the sitting|any) President for commercial endeavors (rather than satire, criticism, etc).

What a gas.

I hate you so much. Puns are the worst thing ever. You're a terrible person for that.

People will complain about anything.

Haha, I don't think anyone's complaining, other than discussing whether it's actually legal or not. Mostly just making fun of them for being really weird.

oh I definitely will eat just about anything after a long hard riding! and then hot shower.... and then ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Eating after a long ride is fine; not so good eating a large meal and then riding a long way. Urp!

Various things.

Visit nephew in college there.

TCS needs specialized equipment in his work van repaired.

PGR ride.

Terp assignment or conference.

State zoo or museum trip.

Passing thru to other locations upstate.

It's a boring interstate ride with almost nothing in between our area and Columbia. Just flat, tree-lined highway.

North of Columbia, rolling hills begin, gets a little more interesting, especially as you get closer to the North Carolina border and mountains.

If you like "country" cooking, the Lizard's Thicket is outside Columbia. Very rustic. While you wait in line, there's a bathroom sink so you can wash your hands before you eat.

Sorry, I digress.

There is a neat inexpensive golf course there too. It's called Oak Hill I believe. We played there often the week before the Masters. There is also a super hot buffalo wing place there (if it is still there). Carolina Wings on the river. Have to sign a waiver before they serve ya.

Sorry, it's like an incurable disease. I cannot resist making puns, no matter how bad they are.

Sorry, we're just gonna have to put you down. You know how it is, and that's really the most humane way to treat pun-makers.

I hope you never stop making puns. The worse they are, the better they are. Or something of that nature. :P
