I am curious, is it because you made it that situation?

You know I'm giving you grief for the sheer fun of it by calling you out on your mama-bashing, right :) ? I don't think you harbor evil feelings about your upbringing -- you've written about your mom with great respect. I think you are just a pain in the bum about other moms, like me :laugh2:.

As for this question, I think so, yes -- if you mean because we opted for CIs. If she remained as she was at age 1, profoundly deaf without CIs (we know that HAs provided her with little access to the loudest envi. sounds, definitely no access to speech sounds), I would never have considered an oral academic environment. If her access to sounds with CIs was limited and speech was difficult to comprehend, I'd not have pursued that approach either.

To answer the Op's question, "Sign language or Oralism in the education settings".

I prefer to use ASL (Sign Language) so that I could understand what was going on in the classroom and could have gotten a good grades for all the subjects. I was in the Oral-Only program many years ago in both mainstream elementary and high school. I really hated it very much. I could not understand what the hearing teachers and the hearing students said. The Only-Oral program is not helping me at all, even if I had an hearing aid. It is okay with one to one person (face to face each other) orally instead of the crowd like in hearing classroom. ASL is a must for me. There I have said my piece.

WOW. And you wonder why Deaf Ed is so f'd up. I kept wondering WHY there wasn't some unified movement to fix all the stuff that's wrong. Now I get it!

Keep on fighting each other. That'll get the next generation very far. Oh, and keep on being rude to hearing people - that works, too. According to some, I'm not deaf enough to be here. Yeah, well, until the Deaf community starts getting their shit together, you may find hearing people useful. Especially when we do neurolinguistic studies that back up your claims. ;)

People like Shel are useful. Informative. Helpful. And Alex - someone who I disagree with 90 per cent of the time - doesn't push things on to people. He's thoughtful, intelligent, and sincere. Lana can be mean as hell but her contributions are meaningful. So why does every freaking thread blow up? Like pfh pointed out, we seem to share the same damned goals!

Others are not so productive. This is a hearing girl coming to the Deaf community looking for some insight so she can formulate a thesis for a research paper and look what happened!

Kinda hard to listen to anyone who has a damn stick up their ass, yeah?

You know what? Since coming here a month ago (and yeah, I was interested in doing my thesis on language acquisition and cognitive development in the deaf) I have thanked my lucky stars 10,000 times that my son wasn't born deaf. Why? Because the idea that he may grow up acting spiteful and spewing hatred all over those who didn't subscribe to his Superior Opinions on Everything Deaf Related was scary.

Seriously, Jiro? pfh? Is that what the Deaf culture is? If Deaf culture = "Hearing Sucks", then you get can bent. If Deaf culture = "Let a stranger make major decisions about your family for you or else we will label you a bad parent", then you're gonna lose some credibility. Criticizing Alex for not hanging out with enough "prominent" Deaf?

Are you serious?!

I actually have no desire to name drop. But I'll say this much; I socialize with Deaf people from Indiana personally.

Just as recent as last weekend too.

I gave you the directions to the source. The information is there, you can go and get it if you wish.

But it makes me glad to see CSDF, ISD, MSD share the same general statistics that I was speaking of.

And how many times have you said the bolded lately? Enough times. I'm guessing you're hoping people actually ask you for names.

ok, so has everyone stopped arguing to notice you scared the OP away?

well .... she was kind of opening a family sized can of worms.

Sorry but I don't know what you're talking about. I can't understand your post at all. It's full of contradictions, personal grudges, and fallacy.

Try again :dunno:

She's going to write a nasty paper about you and PFH and how you guys act all "holier than thou" when it comes to the debates involving the deaf community.

I can see where she's coming from. We're not finding a common ground.

I have said that... then Jiro said that, and now theoracle said that..... you finally see what we're saying.

yup... with your attitude and you have not contributed any single opinion to this issue other than parroting Alex's posts... yep we're not finding a common ground.

it would be just great if ya'all drop the personal grudge and get over it. deal with it. don't be a gnat. :cool2:

Funny. Jiro is the only one here who seems to be concerned about personal grudges.

Then why even bring it up? You're just trying to make yourself seem elite by hanging out with "prominent" deafies. Who cares? Really?

"source please?" attitude implies disbelief to this very issue at hand. You apply that attitude quite selectively.

Now that you're participating in this thread... let me ask you a question. Do you have any opinion/stance in this thread stated by OP?

I have said that... then Jiro said that, and now theoracle said that..... you finally see what we're saying.

If you said that then why did you continue to avoid the "source" thing? We asked you nicely for sources and YOU avoided that. So it was difficult to find a common ground when we cannot even debate with you effectively.

if all your doing in here is to continue to throw oil slick on my attempt to steer this thread back to topic in order to find a common ground, please kindly leave this thread.

:ty:

apparently a few people here cares.

Alex, your buddy, was trying to FORCE me to say something, so I had to clarify I wasn't wanting to share some information.

oh that reminds me... my previous post for Alex has gone unanswered.

Reposted for your convenience
I understand but I'd like to know your opinion based on his claim. Is it bullshit? Do you completely disagree?

Since lanapoo claimed that you are more experienced than me, know more about deaf culture than me, and go to deaf events far more often than me, studied culture and written about it for at least a decade.... surely you may have at least heard about it or not.

I pointed you guys to the direct source. How is that avoiding???

I mean.. THE SOURCE!
