Church's 'Scumbags Welcome' Message Irks Some

Um, they were your words, from your post:

"it's so much fun"

I did say that. I took your use of the word "fun" with quotes to be a bit odd, even maybe mocking. Why the quotes? If I misread that, then I apologize. I enjoy going to an upbeat church service because that does makes it fun for me. It doesn't change my reason for going or my faith. I plan on going to a football game because I know it's gonna be fun. I don't plan on going to church because I know it's gonna be fun. But when that's the end result, I enjoy it that much more.

I find this really interesting actually. Because someone can misconstrue the "stirring" of their soul to be "moved by God" but really they just enjoy the quietness and the soothing sound of traditional Christian music just as some people enjoy the upbeat of Christian rock.

Couldn't he easily say "Whenever I go there, I am moved by God." when it really is just the quiet environment? He might as well just go to the top of a hill in the middle of nowhere and "feel moved by God."

Heh, this sounds like an accurate description of what I like to do. I like to occasionally go hiking somewhere and just sit there, looking at nature and the surroundings. (Except that I know I'm not "moved by God", I'm simply appreciative of a calm and relaxing atmosphere being surrounded by the beauty of nature. I don't see any benefit to mucking it up by bringing God into it.)

I used the quotes to indicate that it was your word choice, not mine. That's all. :)

I've attended many Churches of different faiths...but the most enjoyable Churches I've attended were Black Churches. Why?..Their rhythm (the choir)...and they, too, have musical instruments, loud at times. And they've always made me feel most welcome...hence, some Churches are so "straight-laced" and cold, even "snotty" if you will...all dressed up, "to the 9's"....as if they're going to a "fashion show"!...Black people are not ashamed to show their emotions and don't just sit there, like a "block of ice"....Even the Preacher is loud at times.

I also remember the saying...."be at peace with God...no matter what you conceive him to be."

"Religion is man reaching for God, Faith is God reaching for man."

And, why does man need religion to reach God? Would you say religion is totally unnecessary for that purpose? Granted, religion is necessary for the fellowship of people together for the purpose of helping each other.

There are songs that are meant for worshiping the Lord, and songs that are not. That doesn't mean all other songs are evil. But rock music and Christian music do not go together at all. Just changing the words to a rock song doesn't make it a Christian song.

Have you heard of Carman? He is a Christian rock singer and is fantastic (or he was). I also used to listen to Petra. There are a number of Christian rock bands and groups that are wonderful. Steven Curtis Chapman, Sanctus Real, Mercy Me, and more.

I've read about them or seen brief clips about them on TV.

 I thought you would be a regular listener of them as far as music for enjoyment goes.

No, that isn't the music I enjoy.

Then if you're not singing hymns in church, what kind of music do you listen to for enjoyment?

This is another surprise for me this week as I found out yesterday that our quiet and talented church pianist is a fan of Aerosmith and actually believes Steven Tyler is 'good looking'.

Surprise me.
