FBI violated my son's ADA rights

That has been exactly what I have been saying. Pedophilia is a compulsion, not an obsession. One must act on an obsession to be considered a pedophile ... or am I wrong?

yes you are wrong. pedophile means a person who is into pedophilia.

if one acts on pedophilia, one is considered as a child rapist/molester.

again - "pedophile" is not a legal word nor a criminal word for a person who is into pedophilia.

According to the definition in your post #144 pedophilia is an obsession.

"pedophilia n. an obsession with children as sex objects."

Obsessions can develop into compulsions.

The obsession (thoughts) of pedophilia can develop into the compulsion (uncontrollable behaviors) of sexual exploitation (stalking and porn) and abuse (physical contact) of children.

This is a horrible reminder of one of my neighbors, an old man...who lived alone. The FBI raided his Townhouse, confiscated several computers and took him to jail......He was into child pornography, and videoed himself to little girls. They also found several pairs of little girls clothing in his home....No one knew he was this sick! As he was well-liked, always said "Hello", but basically kept to himself....and to think that there were a lot of kids in the neighborhood that at times played close to his yard!....This happened several months ago, he still is in jail awaiting trial....His ex came by to retrieve the furniture, etc., and she said he would "never" get out of jail/prison, as this had happened before!...We never are "in the know" about some people....

Possession of Child Pornography. 87 months.

Is he in court mandated therapy through the justice system?

I understand you wanting to help him. As a mother I completely understand that we always love our children, even when we strongly disapprove of their behavior. Hopefully his prison sentence will be the wake up call that he needs to understand that he does need help. But you need to let go of what happened at trial, and put your efforts toward insuring that he receive the mental health services and support that he needs while he is incarcerated. That is the way to have him return home a healthier person that is not likely to re-offend.

Seriously? I always thought that someone who had sex with a minor was a pedophiliac? Difference in terminology?

Yes, different terminology and concept. One is a psychological concept, one is a legal concept. One can have sex with a minor, and not have pedophillia. One can have pedophillia, and never had any kind of sexual contact with a minor.

Wrong. Pedophillia is an obsession. Intiating sexual contact with minors is a compulsion.

Yes. Can, but not always. But the fact that they can is why it is extremely important to treat the disorder before it starts to involve a compulsive feature.

Just because someone has a mental disorder doesn't mean that they are not good, worthwhile people. They are sick, not bad. And most are very ashamed of the things that their mental disorder leads them to do.

I don't even understand the comparison of threaten to assault/murder vs threaten to molest.

"OMG, I'm so pissed off, I could just kill him!"

is in the same ballpark as:

"OMG, I'm so horny. I just want to take that little girl and just....."

SERIOUSLY, Steinhauer?

You're telling me that even having a FLEETING thought of WANTING to take advantage of little kids is pretty much the same thing as a fleeting thought of wanting to kill someone?

To me, it's a whole different ballpark. Obviously, killing people is wrong, but to even think about taking advantage of kids is coming from something that is dark, evil, unnatural, and so on.

In fact, let's say that someone said those statements above in a joking way. Would you respond to someone who said "I could kill him!" the same way as someone who said "I could take a little girl and....."? Yes?... no?

Eh? Depends on community standards. To me, killing someone is just as evil as sex with a minor.

Not talking about the actual action. Talking about the threat of the action.

Haven't you ever said "Ug, I could just kill him!"?

yea and compare that to... "ugh, I would rape his daughter"

:ugh:

Bingo!! And trust me, there are many pockets of culture in the U.S. that would not consider having sex with an underage girl to be wrong in any sense of the word, because it happens to fit in with the cultural norms they live within.

I just wanted to say to Jillio thanks for your contributions in this thread. Very informative and educational.

::: SIGH ::: Thanks for your input, Jiro and all. We're just grabbing at straws at this point. Another issue is that he is being denied access to the use of a TTY in the state jail. I KNOW that's illegal!
I appreciate all your thoughts.

Denied access to TTY for the Deaf is the same for other hearing prisoners being denied to use the telephone as well, with the exemption in making ONE TIME call to the Bail bondsman, families, friends and an attorney. Usually, there is a time limit for one call is around 5 to 10 minutes. Thats it!

Sounds like your Son's got equal rights among with others.

She was referring to daily phone calls from jail. The hearing prisoners can use the phones but the deaf cannot. How is that equal?

It's not equal!...In jail, the inmates have a phone on the wall, which they can use anytime to make "collect" calls....they also can have their family set up a service for these phone calls via the jail....

Deafies cannot use this phone. They have to wait until the jailor will take them to another room that has a TTD phone....and good luck! hopefully it's working...(as it wasn't in Duval County)....and the inmate has to wait and wait until a jailor decides or "feels" like taking them to use the TDD phone.

I'm not sure about prisons, but I'm sure there is a seperate room, just like the jail for deaf prisoners.
