Unrest in Egypt; cell phone and internet cut

The news says that US and Egypt now have talks about how Omar Suleiman is going to take over Egypt until the election in september. It's unclear if Sulemain also will join the election.

A quick glance at wikipedia reveals Sulemain as "one of the world's most powerful spy chiefs", with tight relationship with the CIA. No doubt a torture boss.

Looks bad, hope it works out in the end. Middle east is one of the best places I've been to.

Not good. :(

there you go. another American puppet. hope the Egyptians would accept it without resistance.
Can't hurt crossing the fingers. At least the americans accepted the chinese puppet Obama without resistance :)

Seriously, I think supporting Suleiman, especially if he can't behave, will backfire on arab dictators and the US.

eh...elections are in a few months. Re-structure constitution and invite the UN as a voter watchdog/enforcer. Done.
Who will restructure the constitution? Is the constitution the real problem? Is the UN a trustworthy overseer?

I'm sure there's already interested political groups who want to throw in a few names.
You mean like the Muslim Brotherhood? :hmm:

side note: helluva military Egypt has to have that level of restraint. Hats off to them.
Yes.

because it's too obvious -

1. situation isn't getting any better as long as Mubarak's in office - a serious threat to peace in Middle East. It's making America and Israel very nervous
And you don't think a new, unknown regime would make America and Israel very nervous?

2. it's so ironic that Mubarak is the American puppet... and yet.. they said nothing about democracy and election. Makes you wonder why he's been in office for over 30 years.
Again, if Mubarak is an American puppet, why would Obama want to get rid of him and get new leaders for Egypt that America can't control? Maybe Mubarak is not an American puppet after all. :hmm:

3. Egypt can go down in either way - another American puppet or military state like before
Or it can follow the path that Iran took in 1979.

And you don't think a new, unknown regime would make America and Israel very nervous?
look at Palestine under PLO leadership. How's it going so far? more terrorism and violence as people predicted? nada.

Again, if Mubarak is an American puppet, why would Obama want to get rid of him and get new leaders for Egypt that America can't control? Maybe Mubarak is not an American puppet after all. :hmm:
Do you think it's prudent for Obama to ask Mubarak to ignore them and continue to stay in power?

Or it can follow the path that Iran took in 1979.
yep. i hope it doesn't come to that point. we'll see.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QBo6-hpOno]YouTube - The fourth horseman (of Death) at the Egypt protests[/ame]

I know its a glitch but still a creepy video

Officials: Van stolen from U.S. Embassy may have hit Cairo protesters
Washington (CNN) -- A white diplomatic van shown plowing into anti-government protesters in Cairo might belong to the United States, officials said, adding that 20 such vehicles have been stolen in Egypt amid the unrest.

The YouTube video, dated January 28, is one of three from recent days showing drivers seemingly purposefully ramming their vehicle into demonstrators in streets that appear to be around Cairo's Tahrir Square.

The footage caused an uproar online, some of it related to the fact that the van appeared to resemble a U.S. diplomatic vehicle.

"Obviously, we've seen some of the reaction on YouTube and other forums, which is why we're trying to get out and knock this erroneous story down," U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Friday afternoon.

Fellow State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley was the first to comment earlier Friday, saying that American officials were "very aware" of the video and trying to get more information on what happened.

Later, the State Department and U.S. Embassy in Egypt issued a joint statement also acknowledging video of the "hit-and-run" incident that "injured dozens in Cairo." A spokesman did not explain how U.S. officials came to that casualty toll.

The statement noted that "a number of U.S. Embassy vehicles" were stolen on January 28, when Egyptian police abandoned their posts in droves around Cairo. Toner later clarified that 20 vehicles had been taken.

"Since these vehicles were stolen, we have heard reports of their use in violent and criminal acts," the statement said, alluding to the possibility that one might be the van shown on the YouTube video. "If true, we deplore these acts and perpetrators."

The U.S. release added, "We are certain that no embassy employees or diplomats were involved."

Cool helmets :)

News says it's rumors that protesters will march toward the presidental place today. They say Mubarak have to go today. Hope people not are killed.

look at Palestine under PLO leadership. How's it going so far? more terrorism and violence as people predicted? nada.
The PLO is terrible.

Do you think it's prudent for Obama to ask Mubarak to ignore them and continue to stay in power?
I think Obama needs to stay out of it.

Secondary question:

Suppose Mubarak decides to leave. No other countries will take him (they've said that). If he leaves because Obama suggests it, then will Obama invite him to the United States? If he does, how do you think that would look in the eyes of the Muslim world? :hmm:

It didn't go well for us when the Shah of Iran moved to the USA after his ouster.

Whoa.. @ authetic's post of pictures and videos!!

I feeling bad for those people :(

I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean is a "glitch." :dunno:

the glitch is the camera reflecting the fire in the background. It looks like a skeletal rider on a horse moving through the crowd @ 0:14
