So, will the deaf culture be there?

Faire joure, I think you're taking things some Deaf extremists say and painting a whole bunch of genralities. You also seem to think that just b/c we're raised some issues with methodolgies such as Auditory Verbal, we are complete and utter anti oral training.
I don't see people saying that Auditory Verbal isn't language. Just that the Auditory Verbal route is very very intense therapy. The hearing kid equliavant of Auditory Verbal would be parents who constantly drill their kids with flashcards trying to get them to be the kind of kids who will score perfectly on the SATs, and don't really let them be kids.
And oral schools as any schools produce a MIX of results! There are crappy oral schools/programs but then again there are crappy mainstream programs and then there are really good mainstream programs too.
A lot of oral programs hyperfocus on spoken language.....otherwise why would deaf kids NEED an oral program, instead of a mainstream program? Some of those programs hyperfocus so much on spoken language, they neglect written language and other areas. Remember the low academic scores are for the deaf population as a WHOLE!
 
I think too that the hypothesis that Deaf culture is threatened is based on the assumption that the oral sucesses will all be the stereotypical AG Bell achciverrs, and that they will attend mainstream schools that won't kick and scream over any request for more then mimimal accomondations. It's also very likely that many kids may discover ASL and Deaf culture as teens, or in college just like Shel and I did. You're also forgetting faire joure that MANY kids have significent social issues, and can't really function all too well in crowded or noisy situtions. Even unilateral dhh kids may have issues in those areas.
Also, I mean it does seem like there are the stereotypical " I want a healthy normal kid, so I'm going to chose oral only b/c it seems more "normal" NO ASL or Deaf culture. parents.(and you know that could be why you see a lot of students in the oral programs in Utah. I do know, from a friend of mine who is Mormon, that Mormon culture can be kind of "Stepford Wives-ish, meaning suburban high acheiver..and she's the one who told me that actually. )...but then there do seem to be a lot of parents who are OK with Sign but just really want more or better speech therapy for their kids. Unfortunatly, you do seem to have to go private or go oral only to get good speech therapy. Even a garden variety speech therapist wouldn't have a lot of experiance working with dhh kids.
You really have NO CLUE how frustrating and difficult it can be working with public schools who are basicly CLUELESS about how to educate kids with classic disabilites! . NO CLUE at ALL!!!!!! Mainstreaming is NOT the answer....new technology is not the answer either!
 
I recently heard from one of my daughter's speech therapists in Missouri. I asked her this very question about whether the Deaf Culture would still be here years down the road. She said yes, it would since in her experience and with the people she deals with, none of them are happy with their CI's. They regret ever having done it. 4 of the young adults are "pissed" that their parents did that to them. They feel "ostracized" in the deaf community since they are told they are no longer deaf enough and the can't handle the hearing community since they still have a lot of issues. Too many people are asking them too many questions about the implants and not enough about them or other things. They feel like a "walking science project" and hate living like that.

She then asked about my daughter and I let her know of the regression. I have gotten tips to help my daughter and now the two of them are working over Skype to work on her speech. Gotta love some technology!

Most children implanted today are done with avt and require no SLP services after the first couple of years during which they catch up on all that missing learning. So, if your daughter's SLP has a bunch of clients undergoing speech language therapy as adults, many years after being implanted -- yeah, I'd imagine they'd be pretty much pissed off. But if they regret it, they can simply not use their processors, unplug from the technology and learn ASL. That will be my daughter's prerogative when she's older. Very sad that the MO deaf community is ostracizing them, is it common that deaf communities don't accept as deaf anyone brought up in a mainstream or oral deaf education environment or is it because they have used either a CI or an HA?

I agree. If they need therapy more than 3-5 years after they have been implanted, something weird is going on....

Its tiring to talk to new signers when you sign at the rate of spoken english... very slow.

Hence the reason I keep preaching: Give them ASL

I know MO is usually good about all kinds of people regardless of whatever limitations they may have. I just know that the schoolkids are very harsh. I never found any deaf clubs in this city where we were. You had to drive about 40-60 miles to get to one and for the teens it wasn't feasible. They know they can remove the stuff and I understand a lot of them will, but they are still upset about the whole thing. I know my deaf club here in WPB, does not have anyone with a CI. Don't know if it's not accepted or just that they don't come. Easily 60% of them have HA's, but they all sign. Quite a few have almost no speech skills. All they can do is grunt and such, but my son says there are no words or anything close to it. The hands just fly.
 
wow my thread is still alive. I take this thread that having ASL is so useful. :D
