CI Evaluation on monday

eql- my lowest was at 80dB before

I had a horrid experience with Dr. Chen at Sunnybrook...

Lisa, have you thought about seeing a genetic counselor for testing? Same to you Alicia.

There are several progressive hearing loss genes.
 
Alicia, did they do speech on the last audiogram?

They don't bother with me at this point hahaha
 
Ya I got 80 percent and 85 percent at 90 dB I think but that was without noise and maybe ill look into the genetics thing
 
As I understand it easy to determine if one is deaf;can you hear--105 decibels? A test of less than 20 seconds! That is what happened in early Jan/07 which referred me to Sunnybrook Cochlear Implant programme. I had no further tests after that.
I don't there was anything unusual.

Jenny - is he the one who told you you'd have no QoL without a CI?

A genetic test as such will not tell you anything on how "to deal with a hearing loss" only that you may have one of the hundred different genes that have been identified as possibly leading to "hearing loss" in the future.
Jenny B"s "interaction" with Dr Joseph Chen was-as she stated-whether or not a Cochlear Implant "might" make some difference in her life. She had decided already that it wouldn't. That is her choice. Why discuss with a surgeon a choice one has already made-interesting! As mentioned before I saw Dr J Chen re medical suitability for an Implant. Answer yes.Not exactly a surprise from previous discussions at CHS while waiting for Dr Chen's meeting in June/07

I'm not going to answer for Jenny...but why she went is her busines not yours. And who said the genetics test was to let someone know how to deal with a hearing loss...Almost anyone would know a genetics test is solely for genetics and to see what it can be caused by and if you may carry it on to your children. And personally I'm just fine "dealing with my hearing loss" I didn't need to go to umpteen classes at CHS in order to deal with being deaf.

FYI a lot of ppl meet with a cochlear team before making a final decision to make sure they are getting the whole story and are making the right or wrong decision...just because you FOR SURE wanted a CI doesn't mean that it's for everyone.

Are you getting a kickback from AB or something? You seem to be looking up every CI thread from the beginning of this website just to aggressively proselytize for CI. :hmm:

There's significantly more than a 20sec "blast you with 105db" to determine if someone is medically audiologically deaf (defined as 90bd+) ... espeically if the testing is to determine if CI would be suitable for the individual

If that's all the testing YOU received , that doesn't exactly reflect well of whomever did your testing.

If I had already made the decision I wouldn't have gone. At that point (3 years ago) I hadn't made the decision. I went for the evaluation and thought about it for almost another year before coming to my decision.
 
1)I am not getting any kickbacks from Advanced Bionics. 2) I said iIwas deaf BEFORE it was confirmed at St Michael's ENT clinic in early Jan/07-which I was. They had my complete audiological file for over 30 years. When I lost all hearing in my right ear in Feb/92-after a series of tests to determine why it happened. Obviously genetic from my father. Advised then quite possible to lose the hearing in my left ear. which was at Profound level-85 db. Happened December 20,2006. Almost 15 years later. I was examined by head of the department who confirmed deafness by the brief test at 105 db. He referred me to Sunnybrook-forthwith.I was not tested in Sunnybrook-they accepted that I was deaf! It was obvious!
3)Jenny B what you did 3 years ago is vastly different then I did. My first visit was Feb 4/07-Amy Ng audiologist for over 2 hours reviewing why I thought I was a suitable candidate.At the end she agreed. Again very different then what you appeared to have done. Prior comment still stands-your choice NOT to have an Implant-is your choice. No one is forced to have a Cochlear Implant.
We appear to have used different decision criteria re Cochlear Implant.

my eval was in march and was deemed not a candidate right now because my speech discrim is too good ...basically because I guess..and i need to get an ABR but that has to wait til i see my neuro in oct due to other issues
