Federal ban on gay men's blood donation to be reconsidered

Even though my Las Vegas example was for Steinhauser, it also applies for you. This is a classic psychological study & experiment because it applies to many fields especially business (hint - stock market).

Real Risk Versus Perceived Risk - How the Experts Beat the Street

How Americans Are Living Dangerously

and I do enjoy life too much.... too much that I don't live my life with perceived risk. That's why I'm out everyday... riding... where people have a perceived risk of riding for decades - serious injury or death.

Again.....the risk in the hypothetical was assumed ....not perceived.

Safety bubble???? You realize who you are talking to here right????

My whole life has been about risk.....wouldn't have had it any other way. But, I never did so without taking precautions. When I ran into a burning house I never carried a cup of gasoline with me. :giggle:

This thread is about whether or not to add risk to the supply of blood banks. I say no.

Problem, how can the medical community find an infected person whose virus is in dormancy? The dormancy period is up t0 20 years.

Might want to read up how HIV and Hep C tests are done. A person with a dormant virus can still be tested as positive.

why worry about it so much? there are tons of things that can kill you instantly or in a short time like..... Mad Cow, Lyme Disease, and E.Coli.

AIDS? You can live with it for a very long time.

And can unknowingly spread it to a sexual partner or blood transfusion or it's sprayed on vulnerable areas such as the eyes for example, until it's discovered via blood test. This virus isn't something to make light of.

this virus isn't as bad as you think.

So, TXgolfer, how do you propose to resolve the shortage?

Already covered that. If there is a dangerously low supply.....then yes you might have to consider accepting blood from more riskiy sources. As I said earlier......a dangerously low supply would be a bigger risk than accepting this blood. But, a situation like that would call for an easing of restrictions....not completely lifting a ban. The phrase "desperate times call for desperate measures" could be used to explain how we measure risk too. :giggle:

Really? Medical documentation please?

I can't believe you're making a light issue of it, this isn't a common cold. This virus can KILL YOU.

In fact, there's a Federal Law that states if one knows he/she has the virus and spreads it to multiple partners, he/she can be charged with attempted murder.

Are you serious? Isn't bad as you think?

It changes your entire world when you find out that you're infected. There are legal consequennces for not informing people about your tainted blood when dealing with a sexual partner or if a person is trying to stop you from bleeding out and so on.

Also, the virus is spreading rapidly in areas like Africa for example. If this isn't contained, it could wipe out very large population in that continent.

BTW....World Blood Donor Day is June 14th

I will be there.....WILL YOU??????

see Babyblue's source. Many people can live with AIDS for over 20 years (more or less).

so can E.Coli and Mad Cow. So can driving and smoking. The only difference is - AIDS will kill you.... in a long time.

federal law criminalizing AIDS? never heard of this. source please?

is it "yep" and ... in [space] case ?

On a serious note, someone's going around correcting others *cough* A, THE bear. This should be the least of anyone's worries.

Now I REALLY feel like I am wasting my time discussing this with you.

I think Jiro is describing on behalf of the USA. The US isn't at as much of a 'high' risk compared to the other world countries.

Not so much criminalizing AIDS, but expanding on "consenual sex" laws. If your partner is already aware of the virus and still agree to it, you won't be charged with manslaughter.

the difference is - Yiz's version of AIDS is much more exaggerated than my version of AIDS. ie - you will get infected from a spit or touching. or even in a pool with a swimmer with AIDS

AIDS sucks big time but I never viewed it as common cold. Like I said - AIDS is manageable. You can live a long long time. You don't die as quick as E.Coli upon initial infection. Look at Magic Johnson and this....

So someone who is 25 years old should be satisfied with living only to age 45?

That I do agree with. People misunderstand how viruses are transmitted.
