TxGolfer.....

I still have my old Miken Ultra II, which got banned from USSSA, because it was "too good"

An umpire in Houston....Greg Furgeson (sp) was killed by an illegal painted ultra.....He was umping at 2b. Good athlete too but he couldn't react

What is an illegally painted bat?

Now, I used to play for a deaf softball league. And now I'm just a "softball/baseball Mom"

So excuse my ignorance! :P

Just want to know.

An illegal bat (exceeding regulations) painted (or covered in ) with decals to make it look like a legal bat.

I love those Easton bats.

I loved to use aluminium bats with triangular tips because I liked to use my right hand fully gripped down at the bottom of bat for better swings.

The triangular tips have been banned by Softball Canada for more than 20 years. :(

How much do those bats weigh? 28 ounces?

Oh. Ok. Got the painted part.

What types of bats are considered illegal and dangerous that it can cause harm on another?

Curious.... I know I can probably google it. But it is more fun asking!

Ok. Let me rephrase the question.

I honestly want to know.

What is a illegal bat? What is it made of and what makes it illegal?

Heard of them. Just don't know what and why they are illegal.

Only thing I,ve heard is by making it light weight. Drilling out the core. But is they're more to it?

Drilling is for the wooden bats.

Illegal bats -- If you're playing in an ASA associated league they ban more bats (the USSSA bats are hotter than the ASA bats) You can get more information at asasoftball.com. The information is in "Certified equipment".

Cheating happens more at the ASA games. The players will use USSSA bats and try to sneak it into the ASA games. By painting them?

The Ultra2 was just unreal.

There is also shaving the bat, rolling the bat (questionable), and many other methods that are almost undetectable to make a bat out of specs.

When people "shave" a bat they take the end cap off, put it on a lathe and take out some of the inside thickness of the bat. This adds rebound to the bat and significantly increases the pop. Problem is when you get individuals who are not experienced enough and don't have properly precisioned equipment to shave a bat. This creates dangerous weak spots in the barrel which can easily crack or worse shatter the barrel on impact. Also with the higher rebound and recoil this places pitchers at higher danger of injury or worse.

Also for some education on other illegal bat specification read this link. It will help a lot too.

Why are Titanium Bats Illegal?
