TTY/Phone, or TTY-only?

Hi all,
just looking for some comments/thoughts/suggestions.
I will be moving into an apartment with 2 friends (both hearing). Currently, i avoid the phone at all costs (i only talk to my family on it b/c i can understand them ok), but otherwise if I absolutely MUST use the phone, i walk down the road to the payphone-tty. I am planning on getting a tty for the new apartment, but i'm wondering which of these would be best. Also, do people find the printers to be useful or just a gimmic?


TTY-only (similar to this):
Ultratec Supercom 4400
or
Ultratec Superprint Pro80 TTY

TTY/Phone (similar to this):
Ultratec Uniphone 1140 VCO/HCO/TTY

Cell-Phone TTY (similar to this):
Ultratec Compact/C TTY
 
ummm. it depend if you are living in California or not

if you do live in California,the state governor will provide free product for their disability.

I am not talking about business-wise, there is general use of email, such as gmail, instant messaging etc but no kidding, canada is slow in these commuinications
 
*sigh*.. .yes.. IP phone would be great, but we unfortunately don't have that yet. In the meantime, TTY or TTY/Phone!?!

I have a TTY with the printer. It's handy for reviewing information later, such as phone numbers, addresses, directions, dates, etc. It's also useful in case the other party claims you said something that you didn't. Regardless, it can be turned off and on as necessary, so it's an option.

I know people who are either late-deafened and/or fully oral for whom VP or webcam is useless. They don't sign. So TTY's are still useful. Also, in an emergency when electricity and cable is out, a land line TTY on battery will still work.

Thanks Reba.. finally someone who is answering my question! I'm glad to hear that the printer can be turned off. When it's ON, how often do you need to change the roll of paper?
and yes, even if i could get VP/VRS, it wouldn't do me any good because my sign is not strong enough.

I have Ultratec Superprint Pro80 TTY but I never used it in two years because I use mostly VP, instant messanging and e-mails. My phone line was off.

Depending on the model TTY, you can turn the printer off two ways. One is the switch that turns off the printer itself. The other way is one of the function keys that can turn the paper off and on during a conversation (if you have the printer switch on).

It all depends on how "chatty" you and your friends are. Also, you don't need to print every conversation, so you don't need to use it up too quickly. The print isn't large, so it squeezes a lot on the paper.

One suggestion: when you need refills of the paper, go to the office supply section of Walmart, or to a Staples or Office Max rather than mail ordering from the TTY supplier. Much cheaper, and it's the same thing. If you aren't sure, take a sample with you to the store. It's the same paper used in adding machines and cash registers.

If you have friends or family with whom you chat frequently and don't want to bother with Relay, they can buy TTY's also and chat directly with you. They might be able to find cheap ones on ebay.

But thermal roll paper must provides crisp black images for all Superprints. Not blue images which wont work with Superprints. if you buy Superprint Pro80 TTY, can buy cheap 98-ft fax thermal roll papers.

At least there's someone with common sense regarding the current existance of TTYs.

I have the Ultratec Superprint Pro80. Very pleased with it... even though I have only used it like... two or three times since 2005. I only keep it "just in case" if I need it.
