Hello all,

I am writing a short film. Two of the characters are a mother and her 5-8 year old son who is deaf. It is important for the mother to be talking to her son over a relay service but it occurs to me that a 5 year old might have trouble with that. I figured I would come here and get the low down on real life experiences and at what age you find this practical if at all. Is it just my bias not being deaf that makes me think a 5 year old or even an 8 year old wouldn't be very capable of using a teletype machine? Does anyone have experiences that prove otherwise?

Thanks in advance.

If you are talking about Reading, I don't think the average 5 years old can read except maybe sight words. Or words like Hat, Bat... etc. An eight years old can read, write, type... (based on my own son)

If you want the mother to be talking, have her reading his favorite book.

Not enough information to give an answer.

Is the mother using a video relay or TTY relay? If the mom signs, why is she using a relay system instead of direct video to her son? If she is stuck with TTY relay only (maybe video isn't available in their area?), is there a third party at home with the boy who can help with the phone call? (I assume since the boy is only 5-8 years old he wouldn't be left home alone.)

Reading and writing skills are different for a 5-year-old compared to an 8-year-old.

There are too many details as to the circumstances that aren't provided.

If you don't already know the answers, you probably shouldn't be writing about deafness.

I talk to my granddaughter who is only three on video. Her mother places the call and puts her on. It is about like being in the same room. While she could not operate a TTY, she is perfectly capable of communicating with me on video.

Good point. One should either write about one's own experiences or at least thoroughly research the subject, including live interviews, before putting pen to paper.

Oops! I'm showing my age. Pen-to-paper!

:h5: Reba.

As a writer and deaf/HoH, my feathers always get ruffled when outsiders come in and appropriate deaf characters in their work. The vast, vast, vast majority of deaf characters in literature are gratuitous stereotypes and always in subordinate positions.

I understand. I'm the same way about seeing military women portrayed in movies and on TV. Grrrrr!!!

here you go...my mother used a tape recorder and she put pictures from magazines on index cards then the name below the pictures to help me learn every single thing she could think of. She was told that the king james version of the bible is one of the hardest things to start out ready so we read out of that everyday...I could read between 3 and 4 years old
