I have a feeling there's going to be a new segment in the McDonald's New Hire Orientation Program.
If a customer approaches the store with an animal, take note, is there any type of designation that the animal may be a service animal such as a vest or special type of harness/leash?
If the animal has no such obvious designation as a service animal, staff may politely inform the customers that pets are not allowed in the dining area for health and sanitary reasons, but you would be happy to serve them via the drive-thru window.
Service animals are however allowed in the dining area because:
1. They are an aide to the disabled person such as a blind person using a guide-dog, or a wheel-chair bound person utilizing a service dog to assist them in getting around, picking up things, and opening/closing doors where necessary. Other types of service dogs include but are not limited to hearing dogs for the deaf and hard of hearing. Dogs that signals when a person may be having an epileptic episode, or a dog that assists a person with a mental/physical handicap. Usually these dogs will have a colored vest and/or a harness, but if they do not, you may only inquire about the dogs use, and by law no person is required to show proof of the dog's service, but however it is recommended by many agencies that train and provide services dogs to people who need them.
2. No employee is allowed to manhandle any animal while on shift as this may result in injury or death to the employee as well to the animal, the animal's handler, and to other patrons.
3. No employee is allowed to use any type of physical removal of any customer from the dining area. Employees are not properly trained in these methods nor is it covered in the employee handbook. If a situation should escalate or become physical call 911 or the proper authorities in your area, they will arrive to safely diffuse the situation as they are trained professionals.
Lastly and most importantly is that all employees should be work safe to ensure a safe and pleasant dining experience for the customers and a pleasant working environment for your fellow co-workers.
