Marching band + Rain+ HA and CI= complicated.

So, today (friday 30th of october) we had our last football game for the football season. And we were just about ready to get on the field to perform at half time. But as we were waiting for the visitor's band to get done performing, it started raining, it was sprinkles at first, but the electronics had to go back to the high school just in case. And my dad told me not to worry about it, because i was freaking out about my CI and HA that it would get ruined. Everybody told me to relax. But I had a really bad feeling about the rain. So after the visitor band was done, it started pouring and our band was already on the field. I had to give my dad my CI and my HA like as fast as i can. And My section leader asked me whats wrong, i told him i have no ears on right now. and my dad had to explain to him ASAP while we were getting on the field. SO then later on as we were already on the field my section leader told my dad to tell me not to play because i'm not going to be able to hear and figure out where we are at in the music.

So my dad pulled my marimba aside and i was sad because i wanted to be on the field and perform since its the LAST football game for the football season. The other three marimbas were on the field with their boards covered. The viberaphones had a baggie through the flats/sharps and natural keys since it has a guaze in the middle, which CANNOT get wet at all. We have rosewood marimbas [they specifically belong to Rhythm X. a drumline in cincinatti,Ohio. Our pit techinican works with them as well and they keep the rosewood boards in our school and we use them you can google them. My band is currently waiting for NEW dynasty marimbas, we sold our old ones to get new ones.] And rosewood boards are real wood keys. They can absorb the moisture from the air and the rain can go into the keys which makes them swell up or expand into bigger keys, which is bad, because we would have to use a syntheses(fake) marimba keys.


ANYWAYS, getting off topic here. I need to figure out a better plan to keep my CI and HA protected from the rain. We've been having a rainy marching season. And I need some ideas. We are outside often. My dad is rarely with me because he has a night shift at a hospital. And i don't have a plastic baggie with me. But i do have an idea to what i can do to protect my CI and HA. But i might have to talk to my pit techincan about that or my section leader. But if you do have any ideas please tell me because I need to figure out a better plan.
 
I used to be in marching band :) You're in pit then? Do you guys wear your tar buckets (well it's what we called them) or are you free to not wear them? I guess if you can wear your bucket maybe get some kind of plastic that matches it to stick underneath of it that will flare out. It'd be unobtrusive and it would keep it dry.

Oh, what about berets? Our sousaphones wore those, maybe see about that? Might be easier to wear.

haha yes i am in the pit. We don't wear any barets or a tar buckets. [we call our marching hats just hats and plumes. but we don't wear any kind of hat in my pit at all.] the hornline only wears the hats/plumes. the pit doesn't wear anything on top of our heads. the pit girls usually have their hair either in a pony-tail or in a bun. And bangs have to be pulled back. And i didn't want to have my implant underneath my hair because it's kind of hard for me to adjust the magnet if it gets too tight. it gets tight especially when it gets under my hair and when my hair is pulled back.

But I had an idea, and i still need to talk to my pit technican/ section leader but what i was thinking was putting a plastic zip up baggie in my mallet bag that is taped in the pocket, and when it starts to pour i can throw my CI and HA into the plastic baggie and zip it up as fast as i can and just run up to the school and clean the rosewood boards.I have my own mallet bag so i'll test it out at my house first and see how it works. [the exciting part is that we're FINALLY getting our new dynasty boards less than a week :D ] And apparently my section leader says i have to HAVE my implant on at all times. which kind of sucks because there were times i really wanted my implant to be off when it starts to hurt. [sorry getting off topic here.] I'll figure out a way to deal with it somehow. But if my little plan doesn't approve from my section leader/pit technican, i need a plan B. or a second backup plan.

FYI Cochlear is not waterproof!!! It's water resistance which is only few drops is ok, or sweat is ok but to have shower with it is a big NO NO!.
 
oh wow - you don't war the hat in the pit??? hmmmm....... interesting. Well i was in marching band (cymbal) and yes I did have some rainy season. the tar hat protected my HA from rain. since you cannot wear any hats in the pit - why don't you try to find something like water resistant ear muff.

I would, But we have parkas, parkas are like raincoats. When we're in our uniform we can't wear a different raincoat. we have to wear the parkas that the band provided for us. And it does have a hood on it. So i use that. And it just gets really complicated once rain starts to pour down during a half time or so. I'll explain more later. i need to go eat dinner.
 
If you have the Cochlear Freedom it should be ok in the rain. The reps told me that you can play in sprinklers with it, and that isn`t drier than Ohio football rain. Are you going to upgrade to the N5? It will be waterproof enough for any rain.

Oh yeah, i'm sorry. I didn't realize i made a second thread. As for the link i looked at it. Do they have a silver color instead of blue or something? Because the band directors wants my cochlear implant to be the same color , which is silver, to match instead of having colors all over the place for competitions. I'll have to show the link to my dad and see what he thinks about it. Have you ever tried it before though?

I have cochlear freedom. I haven't upgraded to the nucleus 5 yet. My dad is researching about it. Because my audi told my dad that they need to make a different program to make the N5 work with my implant i have inside now instead of getting another surgery and make the N5 work. I have been in the rain with like very light rain, like drizzling rain. I haven't used my implant in sprinklers because of my parents worries of my cochlear implant and hearing aid getting broken by water. I don't worry about the light drizzling rain affecting my cochlear implant or my hearing aid. its the heavy pouring rain. We've been having that a lot this marching season since the beginning of band camp [which was the end of July to August 1st i think, we had band camp for a week.] So, My dad wants to get me the N5 but like i said, hes researching about it. I have my next audi appt on dec.3rd.
 
So you have the N22 implant?? I could ask my audi about it today or wait until friday where i am having training with Cochlear Advocate

Yes, I do have the N22 implant. Right now I'm getting ready to leave for another BOA (Bands Of America) Super Regional competition in Indy,Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium. But I'll check back on Sunday maybe to see any updates on this thread, but i doubt it because we're probably going to get home around 2:30 in the morning and unload the band truck which probably won't be done until 3:30 in the morning, and I probably will be sleeping in till 1 in the afternoon. Sorry getting off topic here.

My dad isn't sure if the Nucleus 5 will work with my implant (the N22 implant) because my audi said that they haven't made a program to work on the N22 yet. And it only works on the brand new Nucleus 5 implant. So, we're kind of waiting to see what will happen. The program probably won't be happening until next year or so. And it would be an exciting thing to have and see what will help me with the rain and such. Because right now i've been having implant pains for a week so far. i'm hoping it stops soon.
 
OK All I know at the moment is that Nucleus 5 works with freedom and current internal implant. I will ask cochlear today to see what are the compatiablity.
