Bracelet Fad Among Middle-Schoolers Said Linked to Sex

By STEVEN RAY HABERLIN

OCALA -- Raymond Andrews had no idea that the bracelets his sixth-grade daughter purchased this summer were related to sex.

However, after speaking to other parents, he learned this new fad among middle school students was something he didn't want his kids involved with. His daughter promised to do away with the bracelets, but not before asking some pretty uncomfortable questions.

"That gets me concerned," said Andrews, whose children attend Belleview Middle School. "If they need to ban these jelly bracelets, they need to ban them."

A new trend, which has some parents and school officials concerned and may very well shock others, has surfaced in Marion County. The newest twist on Truth or Dare, the game involves wearing colored rubber bracelets, which have various meanings, some sexual.

Students break the bracelets off one another and then are supposedly entitled to specific acts, some as innocent as a hug, others sexually explicit.

The trend, which seems to exist strictly among middle school students, is a bigger problem on some campuses than others. One school banned the bracelets last month after discovering their meaning.

Plastic bracelets became the rage among teens in the 1980s with pop stars such as Madonna sporting them on their arms and ankles. In recent years, the fashion has made a comeback among young people.

Students say the bracelets, and their hidden meanings, became popular during the last school year. Inside classrooms and hallways, students -- boys and girls -- would grab at each other's bracelets, hoping to snap one off.

Though there is talk of Web sites providing codes, the various meanings behind the bracelets apparently are devised by students and have no consistency. However, some of the meanings may come as a surprise to parents. One e-mail from a teacher concerning the sixth-grade code stated that a red bracelet stands for a "lap dance" while a blue one symbolized oral sex.

"Last year, it was like a big thing for some kids," said Melissa Radley, a sixth-grader at Fort McCoy School, who no longer wears the bracelets. "I just like the fashion stuff. I said, `I'm not doing that. It's stupid.' "

The inexpensive bracelets are a top-seller at Claire's, said an employee at the Paddock Mall store, which began carrying the item this spring.

Reports of the bracelets causing controversy have surfaced in Central Florida as well as South Florida.

Officials as well as students say the bracelets are mainly a childish game, where the related acts are seldom, or ever, carried out.

But sex, researchers say, is on the minds of more and more middle school students. A recent study shows that one out of five have had sexual intercourse by age 15. One out of seven get pregnant by the same age.

Um... what bracelets are they referring to? Got any picture of these so-called "sex-related" bracelets?

 That's appalling! That's not a good thing to happen, especially school aged kids in middle school! sure hope they'll do something and maybe do a drastic measure of educating them over sex and safe sex and so on.

They're like these...do you remember them? used to be popular in the 80s too.

I'm not surprised that kids are coming up with fads like these anyways... it's stupid that it has to be apparently sex-related. there's always been fads in middle schools and high schools, always changes. Like a few years ago, it is believed that you saved soda top openers (you know on cans) for every kiss you got or crush you had. It's all a silly game.

Besides when I think about it... with these jelly bracelets... it sounds a little painful trying to snap them off -- they're rubber-like and I'm sure welts happen from the rubbing of it when kids grab at it.

Just my opinion and observation.

Old news, I heard about it 2 years ago. But it is inappropriate for teenagers to do that...They shouldn't wear those bracelets.

My God !!!!!! In the old days, sex was practically non-existent and we really learned alots in the classroom. There was no reason to be thinking about sex. Most of us liked somebody then just kiss and hold hands. It was a very innocent time and sex was not even in the picture. It was very cute and you could laugh with a merry heart to see the kids fall in love and try to kiss and be shy and hold hands. That was it !!!!! Sex was not that high of a priority and usually the 11th and 12th grade high school students knew about sex but My God !!!!! Middle school kids having sex. I was right it has to do with liberal media values in t.v. radio the internet things like that and a moral fiber breakdown in American society because then people will soon realize old fashioned good and very Biblical moral values do really work with common-sense. Be nice to see people reject the politically correct garbage moral values and go back to good old fashioned Biblical moral values that made our country so strong and universally respected like in the 1940's even all the way to the 1700's. It did not use to be like this and middle school kids have absoutely no business knowing what sex is and they should be focused on a very solid education in school, saying the pledge of the American flag, a quiet prayer and learning good old fashioned moral values, good manners etc.

I remember I used to wear tons of those jelly bracelets. I didn't get any sexual favors, but I did get them from different friends as a sign of friendship. I miss them. They might be still be with all my old jewelry. I've got tons and tons of old necklaces, bracelets, and chains just hoarded in an old cosmetics box.

*yawn*

Someone musta really been bored outta their mind to dredge this up out of nowhere.

I agree with Lucia. This is so *old news*.

But, on a serious note. Unfortunately, I don't find this all that shocking.

I find it sad, but not shocking. It just goes to show that we need to teach our kids that their bodies aren't to be used as someone else' trophy.

Bracelets are not big deal but making a sexual game out of it by teenagers is sad. They dont need to be doing sex until older when they can be responsible for a baby if it happens. They should be kids and play and learn about friendships, etc. but not serious sex stuff like intercourse, etc.

yeah this is pathetic. my sis wore one. my niece said that it have to do something with sex? i was dumbfounded what she meant by that? That's when I learned what it is. I told her that it is immature and just simply childish games, thats all. its only jelly bracelets, for heavens sake? jeez! it used to be popular back in 80's. I remember wearing it two into one and wear it on the ankle. LOL i dont wear them anymore. haha. :)

are all your ears full of crap? my friends and i have our arms full of these bracelets and we ignore what they mean and everyone sees us wearing them and guess wat the dont give a flying shit
