Today, I went to food shopping. Obviously, I see that there a short man is a down syndrome with his tongue has partly stuck out. However, I am bewildering to see him walked to the parking lot and unloaded his food bags in the car. He was driving! :shock:

I am wondering that there are some down syndrome people have a drive license? :hmm:

Because I used work with Down syndrome and mental illness clients for 8 years. I remember that they told me that Down syndrome people cannot have to drive license. Guess that he is a very intelligent down syndrome? :confused:
 
It's my understanding that some people with Downs Syndrome can be very high functioning. The physical and mental effects vary among individuals.

At one of our local fast food restaurants, the woman in charge of training new people had Down syndrome, plus I know a grocery checker who has it. Not everyone with Down syndrome is completely disabled.
 
it is depend how well they can function. There is different level of down syndrome. Like deaf ppl have different level of hearing loss.
 
If slow learners can learn how to drive with a driver's license, then that is a big change that time is catching to telling normal people that every disabled or able-body people with disabilities can do anything if they want to have a normal life. I just hope he does not get a ticket for driving if the officers notice that he have Down's Syndrome. It is the same us, Deafies, that we can do anything except to not be able to hear. We can drive cars like every normal hearing people. I don't like people telling us that we can not do like not to drive because we are Deaf and I am sure with the same for slow learners too. :D :thumb:
 
I worked as Case Manager with people with Down Syndrome for a while. Some people who happen to have the syndrome do indeed learn to drive. A person who has D. S. can also write a book ,etc - there are different degrees of ability there.

Yes, I have worked with Down Syndrome and some are high functioning to handle a job and be independent. It depends on the mental capacity of the individual.
 
oh wow that is fascinating thing to know. I never knew they can do it. Hoorah for him!
 
I met a guy who doesn't look like he has Down's syndrome. It was after talking to him for maybe 15 minutes, I realized he is of low IQ. I checked with someone that knew him well and he told me that he has low IQ and he can drive. He is careful in driving and he works odd jobs like raking lawns.
 
Now we know how all those people that think Deaf can't drive feel. :giggle:

I also didn't know that... I though know that people with DS may have different IQ levels... I guess it depends on the individual. I'm glad to know he can get his grocery shopping done all by himself :D
 
most of the folks I worked with, who had cognitive disabilities/delays/on autism spectrum, desired to and were able to do quite a variety of independent things - shopping, paying bills, one person was learning to drive, traveling independently, etc. On my caseload there were a couple of people who were close friends, and one worked and had higher functioning ability than the other, so that person would provide assistance for the other, such as bathing,shopping and so on.
 
I have an uncle that is a Down Syndrome. I remember back in the early 1980s, there were some discussions about teaching him how to drive. I don't know what happened or if he has taken driving courses. He is a high-functioned and hard-worker, he doesn't let his handicap/disability stop him from doing what he wants to do.
 
Yea, a friend drive a vehicle, she's DS, high level functioned and skilled fluent ASL.
 
Remember the TV show? Life goes on from 1989 to 1993?

Good show and I miss that show. :( I don't think Corky ever drive. He does have down syndrome.

I remember that show, used to watch it all the time. I also had a crush on the actor who played the guy who had Aids (he was hot!)
