Explosion outside UES Starbucks
NEW YORK (WABC) -- An explosive device blew out the windows of a Starbucks coffee shop in a blast that rocked an Upper East Side neighborhood.

The loud blast was heard at the intersection of Third Avenue and East 92nd Street just before 4 a.m.

The explosion took place on 92nd and 3rd avenue.

Police are still looking for the person who left the device outside of the Starbucks.

The time of day echoed that of a pattern of unsolved early morning blasts that have occurred outside the British Consulate, the Mexican Consulate and the Armed Forces recruiting booth in Times Square over the past two years.

"The similarity is the time. The Mexican consulate, the British consulate, the Times Square bombing event at the recruiting station, we have this event. They all happened between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. that's the immediate similarity we are looking at," said Commissioner Ray Kelly.

The explosion took place on a bench outside of the store.

The bomb squad, OEM, along with the FDNY and NYPD are investigating.

In the earlier cases witnesses and surveillance camera footage showed a suspect escaping on a bicycle.

In today's incident, no such information was immediately available but police were canvassing the neighborhood and collecting and reviewing security camera tapes.

"We will be checking cameras in the area. Right now there are no reports of anyone on a bicycle," Kelly said." We will do a canvas, we will come back and canvas later, back tomorrow morning, see people who may have been in the area. right now we have no witnesses to the immediate event."

"It was a huge boom, and I was inside and thought it was either a gas explosion or a truck ran into the building," said Jackie Klempay.

The coffee shop was closed at the time of the blast. No injuries were reported.

The amount of explosive used today was thought to be the equivalent of two or more such fireworks. While the targets in the past blasts suggested a possible political motive to the attacks, the reason for today's attack was unclear.

"We don't know the motive. Obviously it is a cause for concern, but we are going to do an in depth investigation," Kelly said. "Starbucks has been victimized in the past in other cities. So we are looking into that issue as well."

DAMN DOMESTIC DISSENT! :mad2:

How sad, luckily , it was closed during the time of the blast.

but then... they won't get their caffeine fix if they blow it up

LOL  Very true !!! They'll just have to find another coffee shop. In New York I can't imagine that would be too hard to find ;)

Wow... shocking... people in NYC

Police definitely have to investigate if this isn't the first time this happens!

Explosion rocks Upper East Side in New York
Explosion rocks Upper East Side in New York - CNN.com

An explosion outside a Starbucks on the Upper East Side of Manhattan sent frightened people running into the street early Monday.

The explosion blew out the windows of a Starbucks coffeehouse at East 92nd Street and Third Avenue at 3:25 a.m., according to New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

A "low-order improvised explosive device" exploded after being left on a wooden bench in front of the coffeehouse, Kelly said. The blast could be heard many blocks away, according to CNN affiliate WABC-TV of New York.

Seven people were briefly evacuated from the building above the Starbucks, Kelly said, but no one was injured. The interior of the Starbucks sustained no damage.

It's too early to tell whether Monday's incident is connected to other minor explosions in New York City in recent years, including ones at the British and Mexican consulates and another in Times Square, Kelly said.

He did note one immediate similarity between the detonations: All occurred at roughly the same time of night. He said the police would continue to analyze other similarities.

However, Kelly also noted that Starbucks has been the target of low-grade explosions in other cities.

Police plan to examine surveillance cameras for information that could lead investigators to the perpetrator, he said.

Morning blast shatters windows in NYC Starbucks
Morning blast shatters windows in NYC Starbucks - Yahoo! News

NEW YORK – An explosion early Monday morning on Manhattan's Upper East Side, possibly caused by a small bomb made from fireworks, destroyed a sidewalk bench and shattered windows in a Starbucks coffee shop.

No one was injured in the blast, which happened around 3:30 a.m.

Investigators were looking into the similarities between the explosion and others that have taken place in the city over the last four years, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. The bomb went off around the same time of day as an explosion at the British consulate in May 2005, another at the Mexican consulate in October 2007 and one at the Times Square military recruiting station in March 2008.

In the previous bombings, a bicyclist was seen in the area prior to the explosions. No witnesses came forward immediately Monday, and police still have to see what, if any, security camera footage is available, Kelly said.

"We don't know the motive. Obviously it is a cause for concern, but we're going to do an in-depth investigation," he said.

Kelly said the explosive appears to have been placed on the seat of the bench, but didn't know what kind of container it was in. He said investigators would examine the remains to determine what kind of explosive it was. He was it was possible it was some kind of firework.

Police also were looking at whether the Starbucks — at 92nd Street and Third Avenue, a few blocks from the Guggenheim Museum — was the target.

Residents living above the coffee shop were evacuated for a time but were allowed to return to their apartments later in the morning.

One of them, Jordan Kovnot, a 26-year-old law school student, told the Daily News, "I heard a giant noise — a big, giant noise, like a crash — and there was a flash."
