Bill H.R. 1388: Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act

Yeah, make those children pay for their schooling by doing community services.

That's right. A little community service never hurt anyone. Children and teens nowadays show little respect for authority and volunteering would help them think about others instead of themselves for a change.

It's not volunteer.. sorry

They need to fix that term "volunteer" because that's not what it is.

volunteer is act of kindness and an awarding process.. forcing people to do community service and calling it volunteer is not volunteer at all.. it is a service they have to complete in order to graduate.

They are polluting the term volunteer by making this mandatory.

I guess we just need to come up another word for act of kindness if the gov't is going to steal the word volunteer for mandatory service .

Community service has always been something that is not done for free or as an act of kindness.

Do you think that people convicted of crimes who are required to perform community service do it out of the kindness of their heart? Many of them only fulfill their community service requirements to receive a lesser sentence.

Besides, this country could stand to have children and teens who give back to their community instead of playing video games or surfing the Internet all day. Like I said, it won't kill them and they just might end up learning something in the process.

Kudos to the Senate!

The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act (GIVE Act), H.R. 1388, is a piece of proposed U.S. legislation spearheaded by President Obama and a majority Democrats in the U.S. Congress, with a lesser amount of Republican support. It proposes to create a civilian corps who will be trained in community work as well as other governmentally-assigned projects. There has been some talk by Obama administration officials, such as Rahm Emanuel, of making it mandatory for all citizens between ages 18 and 25.

I don't support this bill if it's mandatory service for 18-25 years.

so it is for ALL citizens right between 18-25? I wonder what is the punishment? no college degree? jail? what? I don't have a problem with colleges (or schools) making a policy to do community service in order to graduate, but Federal gov't???

They probably do it like Singapore... that you are not allow to climb the ladder (make something out of yourself or be successful) unless you complete the singapore military service. One guy from there told me that some people there who started their family young and didn't do the military service had to stay in the proverty line.

It's ridiculous for a federal gov't to even think about controlling people like this.

Yup, Punishment would be probably minor, such as jail, however I don't have much knowledge about this law and I haven't hear about college require community service before graduate.

Thanks to god, I don't live in Singapore, it's very strict country.

Volunteer service is done without coercion, threat of punishment, or expectation of reciprocity. It is done freely, from the heart.

NOT voluneer are military drafts, chain gangs, and any other government forced "service".

Forced community service as a professional requirement is "pro bono" work.
