A Sad Decision for Me

I'm glad things are going ok with Tigger. I hope you don't object to my advise but I would suggest waiting until all your health issues have been sorted out before you get a new dog. I know when I'm not too well, dogs or any other animals can be a real handful.

I think some people who don't have experience with guide dogs seem to think they do all the work for us. Nothing could be further from the truth, while you can go futher with a dog then you can with a cane both come with hard work. A cane can be folded up and forgotten about when you are sick. A dog can't.

But I am glad things do look up at the moment.

(hugs)

dreama,

You bring up a very good point. I don't plan to go to Leader until my rapid cycling is under control for another 2-3 months at the least. Once that happens, then I know I will be able to cope with the physical and emotional demands of training. Besides, I need to exercise a little since I haven't been outside much due to the cold weather we've had here for several weeks. As you know, training with a guide dog involves walking several miles/day from 9am-3pm so I need to get my legs back into shape. <smile>

Let's all  on HA's amazing mood, recovering beloved baby girl and the rapid cycling which mysteriously got out of the way (minus the dizziness still) *sigh*

JamieLynn

You can thank the Clonazepam for putting my rapid cycling to an end for now. LOL! It's a wonderful benzo. :giggle:

On a serious note, I'm very, very happy to have my baby girl with me and am glad I didn't make any rash decisions yesterday when I had reached the point where I lost all hope.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all of your hugs and good wishes! They mean alot and I really do appreciate it! <group hug>

It looks like I'm back on the roller coaster ride again. I took Tigger to the vet. He said the reason she keeps vomiting her food is because I'm feeding her regular sized morsels of dry dog food which she can't properly digest. He suggested that I try using a Senior Formula which has smaller chunks, so that's what I started doing today.

Good news! She hasn't thrown up once! :D

As for her accidents, Tigger's vet gave me some meds that I am to give her everyday. It looks like I will have to administer this med from now on since she is 12 (she'll be 13 in June) and showing severe signs of being unable to control her bladder.

With that being the case, I will be keeping Tigger, but my sister and I are both watching her health. If it reaches the point where I am unable to care for Tigger's needs, then my sister will take care of her instead.

Glad to hear she's doing bnetter now. Hopefully, you won't have to give her up to your sister. Your dog is in my thoughts.

Well, I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide. I'm speaking for myself here but there have been times when having a dog actually made my mental health problesm worse. Especially with my first guide dog Bruce because he was overprotective. This stressed me out. He sensed I was stressed out so he became even more overprotective. I should have retired him a lot sooner then I did, it was just his performance as a guide was excellent. It's just he felt he had to guard me as well as guide me.

I can understand that, dreama. I felt the same way about my first guide dog, Sugar. She was a lovely, beautiful 65 pound golden retreiver, but waaay too much dog for me and far too exciteable and hyper. When I do get another dog, I'm going to have him/her trained on my right side due to my CTS. If I'm given a dog that is too high strung, I won't be able to accept it because it will be too much for me to handle emotionally. However, if the dog is calm, relaxed and easy to control, I think we could work together quite nicely.

The next time I train with a dog, what I'm most concerned about is receiving a dog that is calm and easy to control due to my CTS.

first off lat me say that I'm sorry to hear about your current guide dog , he is more then just your guide he's a companion, a protector , and in his off time a pet and more, I would like to think I know how important a good guide is.

are you allowed to ask for a cretin breed of dog ? some are calmer then others Labradors are a bit hyper when their younger , I think they are fairly common as guides am I wrong about that?

Glad to hear that Tigger is doing okay. I haven't been around much so that's why I'm just now responding. I'm also glad to hear you are doing better. Do you get to decide when Tigger retires?

Glad to hear that Tigger is doing better. I don't know a lot about bipolar disorder, but glad to hear that you have that more under control too. Or at least manageable. It is people such as yourself that I wish more of the people I know could have the opportunity to meet, even if it is only online. Too many people tend to think they have so much to deal with, and they actually have no clue. Good luck and keep up the positive attitude.

Thanks, Lori! :) Yes, it is up to me to decide when I'd like to retire Tigger. Right now she is considered semi-retired so that I can continue to work her in public when necessary.

You are correct. Labs are commonly used as guide dogs. So are golden retreivers and mixed breeds. Poodles are also becoming more popular.

Yes, I'm able to ask for a certain breed. What's funny about the last 2 times I was trained with a guide dog is the fact that I asked my trainer (who trained my previous guide dog and Tigger) if I could have a lab the first time and a golden the second. As it turned out, I received a golden for my first guide and a lab for my second. :)

As far as labs being hyper, Tigger is anything but. She's very mellow and always has been. She does jump up and down like the Tigger character in Winnie-The-Pooh, but she is by no means exciteable.
