My neighbor was robbed!

Earlier today I came out of my apartment to look around (I like to come outside and look at what people are doing outside - there are construction people and other people around). My neighbor heard me come out and asked me to come in and asked me if I had seen any suspicious people or suspicious activity. (He pointed to his ears and then his eyes and then pointed to people/things/air in general to ask that question, and I can lipread a little bit). I said no. He then gestured me to come inside and he showed me the empty TV set (he is hearing and we didn't have paper and pen on hand at that point) and then showed me the broken glass on his patio door. I said "You've been robbed?!" (gesturing) He said, "Yes!" Apparently he had just gotten home when I came out of my apartment. It was about 5 pm. I had been sleeping for most of the day and then I was busy making phone calls. Then I came outside at 5 pm. Apparently the person who robbed him had climbed into his patio (there are fences on our patios), and then broke the glass (the door has glass panes in it) to get to the deadbolt on his door, and broke in, and took his TV. He was quite upset. Apparently it was an expensive big TV. I had him call 911, and the cops came. I also told him that he should inform the management office of the robbery. Unfortunately, I did not see or hear anything happen so I was unable to provide any suspect information to the cops. Fortunately, he has renter's insurance, so hopefully he will be compensated for the stolen TV and get a new one soon. I think it is going to suck to not have TV to watch. He is disabled, he is an amputee and gets around on crutches, and has a dog. I am surprised that the robber had the gall to break in with the dog there. It is a large dog, but maybe it's because the dog doesn't bark - I can hear large dogs, especially basset hounds, bark with my right ear (the non-implanted ear) - and I have never heard his dog bark ever. There is a sign on his patio door that says "Beware of dog" and the robber still has the gall to rob him! And in broad daylight!

I am very grateful that I was not robbed. From now on, I am going to start leaving the patio light on, as well as a lamp in the living room on all day and all night, so people will think I am home during the day and awake at night and not try to rob me. I may get a higher bill, but I would rather spend a little more each month than have my expensive shit get stolen. I also always keep my windows and patio door and the sliding doors completely covered so no one can look in and see what I have and "case" my apartment if they want to rob me. I frequently check all my locks in all 3 of my doors to make sure they are locked 24/7, and I also double check all the locks each night before I head to bed as well. I am a bit paranoid to start with, so I already check my locks frequently and have done so for a long time anyway. I do not have a dog and can't afford a dog right now. I have 3 cats and that is all I can afford right now. I would consider putting up a "beware of dog" sign but that did not stop the robber from robbing my neighbor, so that probably is pointless. I absolutely cannot afford to be robbed, as I am on a fixed income, and cannot replace expensive things if I have been robbed. I don't have renter's insurance because I didn't think I can afford it, but I think I will do some research and find out if there are any low-cost renter's insurance when I get up later. I live alone but I don't tell strangers where I live. I have two deadbolts on my front door, one with a keyhole, and one that is keyless. Then, there is a deadbolt on my patio door that also has a keyhole, but I think I am going to demand that the management replace it with a keyless one, if it makes any difference, or at least add a keyless one. But I am not sure it would make a difference at all. I also have a lock on my sliding doors to my patio too as well, with a bar across the sliding doors it to prevent anyone from opening the sliding doors if they were able to lock-pick the lock (without breaking the sliding door glass). I think I might ask the management to replace the door with a solid wood one, because it is a wood door with glass panes. But I doubt the management office will fulfill that request. That's how the robber got into my neighbor's apartment, through the same type of door. I cannot afford to move. And my fiance would move in with me, but he cannot afford to right now, and his grandfather was recently ill and was in the hospital last week, so he wants to stay home and keep an eye on his grandparents for a while. (Please do not suggest nursing homes as they do not need that, they are just old, and he was ill last week only because his blood pressure got too low and he passed out - they adjusted his blood pressure medication and he is perfectly fine now. They do quite well for their age and health conditions.)

Aside from what I have just said, does anyone any advice on how I can prevent a robbery or break-in? I am now worried that I will either get robbed while I am not home or someone will break in while I am sleeping, and rape or kill me. :cold: :Ohno: I live alone. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you!

During the five years I was single, with my wife gone there was no one to watch the house while I was at work or shopping, I used Accularm. It cost $1,200 to install motion detectors in all the outlaying rooms plus first year of service. I also had to pay for police permit for the alarm, I think $30 for 3 years. After that it cost me $300 a year for the service.

I really could not afford the initial $1,200, but what I stood to lose was worth far more than that.

Also if you are renting renter's insurance costs about $160 a year around here.

lucia,

i'm so glad that you're safe. <hugs>

i have renter's insurance through allstate and pay $124 annually.

:cold:.. Glad you re okay! Out there crazy people :(

I wish I could help but, my best friend live in her apt and she did buy 10 videos of baby something like that... One for watching her son sleep, plus a few of vidoes, hiding in each room include bedroom and bathroom but just hide the montior in the cloest and her finace know how to make the video tape from the monitor also, they bought special door knob that people can't enter, EVEN manger of Apt can't enter their apt unless they ask my best friend and her finace to letting them enter at time and when.

I agreed with you about nurse homes, just don't make your fiance's grandparents going to there since they are not good.

being robbed suxs !! having a neighbor next door being robbed is far worse as in your sitution. I have no idea how I can stand the fear of knowing I could be next. Hopefully nothing wont happen to you and your stuff.

Get a gun.

Then get a sticker that says, "Crazed PMS Woman lives here with a gun."

My sister did that and she was never robbed!

Oh, wow! That is a scary experience. I have been robbed once, and it really leaves you with a feeling of having been invaded and not being safe in your own home. I understand your anxiety after a neighbor having been robbed so close to you.

BTW, on Byrdie's suggestion...I agree. I had a friend that lived way out in the country, and he had a sign on his door that said, "This house protected by shotgun 3 days a week. You guess which days."

Lucia, I understand how vulnerable you must feel with a neighbor close to you being violated via burglary. Its an unerving and scary feeling. I like what you have already with preventative and precautionary methods in place. I have no idea what the cost is, but what do you think about a couple things of mace handy in your house, or perhaps one convenient tazer apperatus. I don't know how you feel about a small pistol for your safety, but thats always a wonderful deterrent or self defense if robbed while at home. I don't own one, but seriously would like a small pistol, like a 22 type pistol for defense of my house. I bet the cost though would be somewhat high for one- probably 150+ dollars.

I was in Winnemucca Nevada last summer for a motocross event and had a heat stroke and seizure. when they took me to hospital, I ended up having some valuables missing and I was so very let down. I wasn't just robbed, but was so during a period of vulnerability. Grrr.

small pistol is very costly. The smaller the gun is, the more expensive it is. That's how these anti-gunners make it difficult to own a concealable gun. Go to store and you'll see shotguns/bigger guns are much cheaper than smaller pistols. For $150+ - you can get yourself a nice 12-gauge shotgun but a small pistol is typically at least $300. I wanted to buy a small snub-toe revolver but I was appalled at the cost. It was at least $600. I'm going to buy a shotgun later this year (yes it's for sport purpose) but it's not on my priority list.

What about derringers? Ever since Val Kilmer's act in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I have went on with the concept of a derringer being a homosexual weapon. But it's ultra small too, it fits the concept of being low profile.

Lucia, I am sorry to hear what happened and am glad you are okay.

lol lol that good ole' derringers. small gun = hard to control. If I were to suggest a gun for inexperienced purpose for purely home defense purpose - I'd recommend a shotgun - easier to use and easy to intimidate robbers.

Lucia - from what I read on your post... it sounds like a robbery committed by someone he knew. It's possible. I'd like to ask some questions to give you better advice.

1. Do you live on ground level?
2. How many point of entry do you have? (something big enough for a man to get thru)
3. What kind of neighborhood do you live in?

Simple Safeguards -
1. sticker sign of security system with fake aluminum stripping on the windows & your patio door
2. get a cheap motion detector at Radio Shack that will "scream"
3. get an anchored metal box (inexpensive safebox) for your valuables in your closet
4. get a thick wooden stick to jam the windows & patio sliding door
5. get a door jammer
6. cover all windows when you're away

You live alone? I thought you live with your boyfriend or something?

...or that I'm proably WAY behind news. >.>

But anyway, you could get a special deadbolt installed or set in some security alarm or whatever.

Leaving the lights on at night is a good idea, just keep it visibile where people can see it outside.

I also think you should keep the windows covered at all times so they wont see what you have in there that makes them eager to break in and steal it.

The rest that Jiro mentioned are pretty good advices.

For Defending the person's home, the shotgun is the most perferred weapon.

not sure about a gun. especially a shotgun. if someone breaks in and sees you going after a gun there not going to just stand there and let you shoot them they'll take the gun away. thats something i think about if someone breaks in and finds my guns will they use them on ME? maybe just get the sticker and out on the window they dont know if you do or dont have a gun for sure. and theres small alarms you can install on doors or windows that dont cost much that take a key to turn on. as far as a keyless lock, just use a double dead bolt lock so they cant break a window and reach in and unlock it. deadbolts are tough to bypass unless the door frame is busted in. the cylinder on those have a hardened steel pin in the center and if someone tried to cut it and got to that pin, the pin would just roll.

Get a double barrel 12 gauge shotgun would be more than nuf to scare robber away. Don't aim it with your shoulder, it's a shoulder bruiser!! (my brother's girlfriend got biggest bruise on her shoulder and was crying in pain right after shooting with my grampa's old single barrel 12 gauge shotgun )

I planned to have X10 security system with bullet cameras. So that I can check my house online or mobile. I've tried X10's Xray vision software (free) and it use webcam as security/monitor system. I had it sent to my mobile device. It sends snapshots every hour (configurable from 1 min to 1 day or week). It was neat but annoying cuz I didn't set timer to start and stop. Nice.

Another way is buy a "fake" security sticker and stuck it on windows of the house where anyone can see. My parent use that and it works every time. Their neighbor got robbed but not their house. But still it's kinda risky if robber is smart to recognize fake security stickers.

3. get an anchored metal box (inexpensive safebox) for your valuables in your closet

Not only in closet. Some homes or apartment have excellent hiding place for safebox. At my old home, in closet there are on the wall shoerack (built-in) and it have a removable bottom shelf (just near floor level) that fooled anyone easily (it look like it's been nailed in). It was an excellent place to hide checkbooks and valuables too.

Some homes somehow have perfect hiding spot for valuables such as false wall, deep holes in basement ceiling (under 1st floor), certain spot of wood floor allow you to remove, and some furnitures with perfect hidden features, shelf with false wall ect...

You probably read article about guy found little safebox attached to string behind bathroom wall while remodeling and it had over thousands of dollars in crisp cash was dated back in 1950's. It was so well hidden that no one knew about it except for former owner of the house who may have died.

Maybe hide it behind cement wall like the way Al Capone did in Chicago (remmy 20/20 crews filmed while demolition crew tore down the wall to find Al Capone's safebox and failed to find it )

Some can build hidden spot and DO NOT brag or show anyone what you built or have!!!

Get a double keyed deadbolt lock. If robber breaks the window and tried to unlock the deadbolt inside, he won't be able to because there are nothing to turn unless you left key in the deadbolt inside of house..

At my old home, I used double keyed deadbolt lock to prevent my very young kid from opening the front door and wander out in front. It works very effectively. I had window installer came by and guy saw my deadbolt lock on front door, told me it's a safety hazard and supposed there are fire in the house and how can you get out (he was a little agitated). I told him, look at three big front windows, I can easily kick it out and get out cuz it's close to ground level anyway also to prevent robber from breaking in cuz I have side window next to front door.. He agreed and left me alone.

Lucia, I know what it is like to have my apt broken in and robbed. About 5 years ago, someone broke into my and my roommate's apt and trashed it but u know what the most frightening thing about it? They left a butcher knife with ketchup on the blade on my bed with strange bras and undies. That totally freaked me out cuz it was like a message that someone was going to murder me. I was single and living with another female deaf person so I was paranoid at nights knowing that both of us couldnt hear anything. I moved out to a house with another deaf couple. Felt better.

It was on the 2nd floor and we had a double bolt lock...they scaled the walls and went thru my patio door. Amazing to go thru all that.

Yes, my and my roommate's valuables were stolen. We had no renter's insurance..since then I always got renter's insurance.

Others have good suggestions.

Hope u will be ok.
