any questions about braille? ask them here!

Right, got it Hear Again. Thanks. <smile>

So the idea that the brain takes the same dot combinations and gives them different meanings based on context applies.

Haha, I was just going to post that example but you beat me to it.

I was trying to say before that for example, 2-5-6 which is dis- or dropped D in grade 2 braille would be 4 in Nemeth, but it's still the same raw combination. So when reading Nemeth, you would process 2-5-6 as 4 on its own (without a number sign).

Is that accurate?

(Sorry I don't know Nemeth yet.)

yes nika, that's exactly right. <smile>

Sorry I was being confusing. When I said the same dot combinations, I meant the same raw dot combinations, but with different meanings attached to them.

oh, okay. thanks for the clarification. yes, you are correct that nemeth uses some of the same dot combinations as standard braille.

Does braille for music use the same raw dot combinations? In other words, do dots 2-5-6 mean something, even though 2-5-6 doesn't mean a period, dropped D, dis-, or the number 4?

Nemeth is my next goal. I'm very new to blindness (only a few months) but I want to be a perfectly literate blind person!

Thanks a lot guys for all the great info!
Now I understand the reason for lack of cheaper braille displays. First, not many people are going to use them anyways, and secondly if anyone wants it they can get despite the higher cost because of the government help.
I was wrong in thinking of them in the same way as, lets say, Amazon Kindle.
Thanks again <smiles>

lol cuz i cant think of a question to ask until u mention so i asked this person abt anime XDD

I'm personally not very into anime, but I do love Japanese culture on a larger scale. Especially the language and the food. <smile>

Also Japanese is one of the few braille systems that doesn't "translate" American braille into Japanese. They use the 6-dot system but in a whole different way to represent the Japanese syllabary, Hiragana.

i think it's great that you want to learn nemeth. if you picked up on standard braille quickly, i don't think you'll have any problems with nemeth.

i'll have to send you a pm about braille music notation too, since some of the dot combinations are hard to explain.

by the way, i can't remember what thread it was in, but you offered to help me learn french. i think i'm going to take you up on that. thanks! <smile>
