In other thread that where Sequioas posted and they made big mistake to make too many SUV that couldn't sell so well and they need cut on produce of SUV then make more regular car or other plan to develop new car with efficient fuel or something.
Mistake? Nope it is not mistake, it is called GREEDY! They all think is what?
M O N E Y! And yes that is all they understand, yet won't understand anything else. Is it U.S. Government's problem? I don't think so, why? Uncle sam made several attempt to get this reversed over years and failed because of ignorant automaker executives!
I don't consider your post as always true because you don't post any source to have support with your comment, even it's your opinion and have you read link at first post?
Check out in other thread, Sequioas made good point.

Sure here is the link gas guzzler loophole
This shows how these greedy auto maker dodged around these to avoid trying to improve their vehicles to be less gas consumption. Why? It is all about P R O F I T!
Now they are facing cosequences.
Why do you think Japanese vehicles are well ahead? That is because Japanese THINK about future not now like these American automakers are.
Sure Sequoia made good point, his point valid for today, not 15 years ago. I am speaking for 15 years ago where U.S. government tried to convince US. Automaker to be more fuel efficient, they (Automaker) refused, now they are paying huge price for refusing. Now that my point is.... *IF* US automaker are smart enough 15 years ago to start then they won't have this mess right now.
Ok, thanks for link.
I'm not surprised about US automakers have been done with all damage in funds.
If Ford is going bankrupt then I would hate to see Ford Mustang and Ford Escape to be gone, same with GM for Chevy.
Yeah, I think the damage is done.In fact, this is NOT the first time or second time it happened. It is now third time.
First one was early 70's, second was mid 80's and now is third time, why automaker have not learn lesson? Go figure!
I'm vehemently against any bailout for anyone, including the one the airline industry received after 9-11. Sink or swim . . . bailout is not an option.
Do I care? NOT!
These auto makers and unions have been very greedy over years, now it is payback time for them.
Believe it or not, a good family car cost less than $5k back in 70's now it is already over $30K
